Schumer rips GOP senator for questioning Durbin's account of Trump meeting

Source: The Hill

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 01/14/18 01:13 PM EST

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) ripped GOP Sen. Tom Cotton (Ark.) for suggesting that Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) fabricated a quote from President Trump reportedly referring to Haiti, El Salvador, and several African countries as "shithole countries."

In a statement on Schumer's Twitter, the New York Democrat attacked Cotton's comments on CBS' "Face The Nation," which Schumer called "disgraceful."

"I certainly didn’t hear what Sen. Durbin has said repeatedly. Sen. Durbin has a history of misrepresenting what happens in White House meetings, though, so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised by that,” Cotton said.

Wouldn't that send a message to America?

There is nothing honorable, patriotic or respectful in today's GOP and Trump's speech will be bullshit lies and ego-tripping anyway.

The government, like our nation, is divided. Show the American public the truth.

high profile boycotts though can get media coverage and still leave a Democratic presence to either boo or stay seated when Trump is making one of his grandiose statements.

From Wikipedia:

The U.S. Senate has developed procedures for taking disciplinary action against senators through such measures as formal censure or actual expulsion from the Senate. The Senate has two basic forms of punishment available to it: expulsion, which requires a two-thirds vote; or censure, which requires a majority vote. Censure is a formal statement of disapproval. While censure (sometimes referred to as condemnation or denouncement) is less severe than expulsion in that it does not remove a senator from office, it is nevertheless a formal statement of disapproval that can have a powerful psychological effect on a member and on that member's relationships in the Senate.

In the history of the Senate, 10 U.S. Senators have been censured, the most famous being Joseph McCarthy. Their transgressions have ranged from breach of confidentiality to fighting in the Senate chamber and more generally for “conduct that tends to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute”.

So one needs a majority vote to censure a Senator. How would that work in McConnell's Senate?

and ensure that the FBI and the DoJ will be seizing their ill-gotten assets. It must be repatriated to the U.S. taxpayers.

Ensure that they resign from their seats completely, not from some two-bit committee that no-one cares about (at present)

As a life-long Democrat, I don't need to discuss the culpability of the Republicans. Their behavior speaks for itself.

Simply, with a Republican majority in the Senate, any censure will not pass. Equally important, with McConnell at the helm, there wouldn't even be a vote on any censure resolution.

"Following comments by the President, I said my piece directly to him yesterday. The President and all those attending the meeting know what I said and how I feel. I've always believed that America is an idea, not defined by its people but by its ideals," Graham said in a statement on Friday.

Graham neither confirmed nor denied the controversial remarks attributed to Trump, but the GOP senator said he appreciated statements from Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

"I appreciate Senator Durbin's statements and have enjoyed working with him and many others on this important issue," Graham said in his statement.

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/368772-graham-i-said-my-piece-to-trump-directly

Graham also reportedly confirmed hearing Trump's racially charged remark in a conversation with fellow South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott.

Reached Friday at a Samsung appliance plant opening in Newberry, Scott said that Graham told him the comments, as reported in the media, were “basically accurate.”

Sen. Jeff Flake, a fierce Republican critic of the President, was not at the meeting but tweeted that he had heard directly from those who were in attendance.

"The words used by the President, as related to me directly following the meeting by those in attendance, were not 'tough,' " he said, taking issue with the President's tweet. "They were abhorrent and repulsive."

Of course I'm not surprised in the least, and I would bet $$ that it's true.
