After 30 years in U.S., metro Detroit immigrant deported to Mexico

Source: The Detroit Free Press

After 30 years of living in the U.S, a 39-year-old Lincoln Park man was deported this morning from Detroit Metro Airport to Mexico as family and friends wiped away tears.

Jorge Garcia was brought to the U.S. by undocumented family members when he was 10 years old. Today the landscaper has a wife and two children,, all of whom are U.S. citizens.

In the past, Garcia, a child of undocumented immigrants, would have been allowed to stay in the U.S. But because of the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration, in November Garcia was ordered to return to Mexico. His supporters say he has no criminal record and paid taxes.

Nevertheless, Garcia had to be removed, said Immigration and Customs Enforcement. On Monday morning, accompanied by ICE agents at Detroit Metro Airport, Garcia went through security as supporters around him held up signs that read, "Stop Separating Families."

To families? How in the hell are we going to stop this abuse and human rights violations? Yes, people like these are being violated by a country who was once thought of as a Dream.

At age 40 to be told, "You must go back to your native land you've never lived in." And then they actually put you there. I guess they can just shove you off the bus on a corner in Tijuana with a suitcase.

It's akin to driving a pet miles away and dumping them off to get rid of them because you don't want to feed them anymore.

This guy paid taxes. He was a productive member of society.

Sadly, there are stories like this all over America.

In the town of Elyria, Ohio, a Catholic bishop tried to intervene against the deportation of a man who has for nearly 14 years been the primary caregiver to his oldest son, who is 28 years old and wheelchair bound. His son suffers from cerebral palsy and is unable to care for himself.

This story is from last fall and appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

It's unreal to read many of the comments after the article who say "illegal is illegal, he should go" and "you start making an exception for one, then they will all have sob stories," etc. etc.

Because those deportations have been (temporarily?) halted by the courts, haven't they?

This is heartbreaking and beyond disgusting. It smacks of Nazi Germany, frankly. The only thing is, we're too "enlightened" to cart them off to the ovens.
