Trump thinks he could easily beat Sanders in 2020 match-up: report

Source: MSN/The Hill

President Trump has been saying that he could easily defeat Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) if he challenged him in 2020, Politico reported Monday.

Trump has been speculating with aides and other Republicans about which Democrat will run against him for the presidency, but has dismissed Sanders as a viable candidate.

The president has said that Sanders, 76, won't have the energy for a second presidential bid, but that he could easily beat the Vermont independent if he decides to run again. Trump will be 74 at the time of the election.

Allies say Trump should be more concerned about a bid from Oprah Winfrey or former Vice President Joe Biden.

This is a big mistake in my opinion. Of all of the potential nominees for the Democratic nomination, only Bernie Sanders can seriously make a bid for Trump voters. If Trump is America First, Bernie can be America First of the First most notably on trade. While Trump made a splash in ripping up trade deals like TPP and demanding re-negotiations and threatening to pull out of many deals with U.S. trading partners, Bernie would follow through and totally rip them apart. For example, here is Bernie just a few weeks ago destroying Trump for failing to follow through on his threats to rip up NAFTA:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-12-13/bernie-sanders-to-trump-on-nafta-for-once-keep-your-promise

Bernie Sanders Tells Trump to Keep His Promise on Nafta

President Donald Trump is finding an unlikely ally in his efforts to overhaul the North American Free Trade Agreement: the political left.

Civil-society groups, union leaders and left-wing politicians have opposed almost everything Trump has done. But they’re urging him to stand firm in his attempt to overhaul Nafta -- and face down opposition from business groups, who complain that U.S. companies will be hurt by the proposed changes. Mexico and Canada have called U.S. demands unworkable, including on regional-content requirements for cars and investor-state dispute systems.

Senator Bernie Sanders, an outspoken critic of trade deals in his campaign for president last year, called on Trump to deliver. “When Donald Trump campaigned for president, he promised that he was going to stop corporations from shifting American jobs to Mexico,” Sanders said Wednesday at a rally for the #ReplaceNafta movement in Washington. “For once in your life, keep your promises.”

Many pro-trade Republicans oppose the most contentious U.S. proposals, which the administration says will lure manufacturing back to America. Trump may need votes from the left if he hopes to pass a revised Nafta. That means courting organizations such as advocacy group Public Citizen, which opposes much of Trump’s agenda, including his views on climate change and bank regulations. However, the non-profit is tentatively backing several U.S. positions at the negotiating table, including a push to eliminate tribunals that arbitrate disputes between governments and companies.

Thus, while other potential nominees might appear to be partisan, Bernie can actually hammer Trump for being too willing to stick with trade deals and international agreements.

The GOP has always represented to a deal with the devil bargain between tax cuts and no regulations for the rich in return for catering to the resentment and xenophobia of white working class workers. Southerner Lyndon Johnson hit the nail on the head:

Thus, Trump will run away with GOP nomination in 2020, because he openly embraces racism. The only way Trump loses the nomination is if he were to accept some compromise on immigration, which is why he is just going through the motions and moving the goals posts on DACA. He does not want a deal. He just wants to simultaneously blame Democrats for refusing to negotiate, while bragging about how he kept out people of color while leaving the door open to Aryan looking folks.

Trump will win the 2020 nomination easily, because the GOP base is center around white resentment. The rich then will happily fall in line because Trump is also a rich dude who is going to look out for his personal financial interests, so they will donate hundreds of millions in support of his campaign.

Trump's economy. Trump already groups socialist and communist together as if they are the same. Trump only has to put the fear of God into the 1 in 6 who aren't part of his base and he has won. Coming from a "socialist" European nation, I would love Sanders to be president. I agree with most of his positions, but I don't think he can win.

Besides, Sanders is not a member of the Democratic Party. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to let people run for office under your banner if they aren't willing to actually carry that banner outside of election season.

The American people and the Democratic Party need fresh faces to fight for our Democratic values, inject new ideas, and carry us forward into the future.

I look forward to voting for someone in 2020 that most of the United States has hardly heard of in 2018.

IF there was an R with an actual spine, who had some personality, who could hold water against the 45 freakshow, he might be able to get him in a primary.

But, if you get a half dozen or more candidates, they won't be able to acrue the votes needed to beat the "base."

Who in their RIGHT MIND actually thinks that moronic idiot will even be in office in 2019 to make it to the 2020 election? Not I... He will NEVER, EVER, EVER make it through this alleged presidency that Vladimir Putin has appointed him to. What a fcuking joke. It absolutely makes my blood BOIL when corporate media sources talk about who is going to oppose this idiot when this idiot won't be around to be opposed. When (assuming that Putin's hacking doesn't totally take over the country's voting machines like they did in WI, MI and PA to the tune of 80,000 votes) Democrats TAKE OVER THE CONGRESS, does anyone think for a moment that that shithole won't be removed or impeached - notwithstanding what Mueller's team may have exposed by then. So knock this silliness off. For the love of God, please.

There is a reasonable chance IF Dems win the House by a big enough margin, they could bring him up on articles of impeachment.

But, there is zero chance that the senate will come up with the 66 votes in the senate to prosecute it.

The path is there IF this country can get its head out of its ass, but it isn't going to happen near as quick as you want.

Get at least the House this November to get SOME handle on him.

Get the White House in 2020, then whatever evidence that Mueller (assuming he does not get axed) might get on him
into play to prosecute him.

Odd chance they can figure out how to prosecute him while he is still POTUS, but even at that, the arc for the legal process will extend along the same lines most likely.

But Trump ain’t going anywhere. The only reasons he does not run against in 2020 is health or he decides not to.

There will be no impeachment. Or should I say, no conviction. And forgot the 25th amendment.

You need to study a bit on how this all works.

If we nominate the wrong candidate in 20 he could win again.

I could care less about Trump's assessment.

That said, I like Sanders - and I would support him. I think the best thing about him is that people think he is telling the truth.

He has credibility - and that is what we are craving.

On the minus side, I do think he's too old. I hope someone younger (a new voice) will emerge.
