Democrats Score Special Election Upset In Wisconsin GOP Stronghold

Source: HuffPo

Democrat Patty Schactner won a special election for a state Senate seat in Wisconsin Tuesday, scoring a huge upset victory for her party in a district that President Donald Trump handily captured just over a year ago.

It was the latest in a string of election victories for Democrats since Trump took office, and a sign of hope for the party that the energy from the base and frustration with the president could lead to more wins in November.

The Associated Press reported that with nearly all returns in, Schactner, the the chief medical examiner for St. Croix County, was winning by more than 1,600 votes.

Republican Sheila Harsdorf held the seat since 2001, but she left in November to become Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) agriculture secretary. In 2016, Harsdorf won reelection by 26 percentage points, and Trump beat Hillary Clinton by 17 points. Republican Mitt Romney also won the district in 2012.

Hi, Karen --- It was actually DHS, specifically acting undersecretary Jeanette Manfra, who acknowledged that DHS had not conducted a forensic examination on any individual voting machine during her testimony at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on June 21, 2017. The relevant segment starts at about 58 minutes:

Here's Brad's article on it: http://bradblog.com/?p=12192. More on it can also be found here.

surprised that this district was flipped. It is a well off district with lots of transplants from suburbs of Mpls. But sure am happy.

This is an incredibly good summary of @PattyforSenate win in WI last night by @jameshohmann. It nails why Patty won, the flood of GOP cash, and how bad this is for Republicans.

The Daily 202: Unexpected defeat in rural Wisconsin special election sets off alarm bells for Republicans

By James Hohmann January 17 at 7:29 AM

With Breanne Deppisch and Joanie Greve.

THE BIG IDEA: Ten months is an eternity in politics, but a stunning Democratic victory Tuesday in a special election deep in the heart of Trump country suggests a blue tsunami could be forming.

President Trump became the first Republican to carry Wisconsin in a presidential election since Ronald Reagan by running up his score in places like the rural 10th state Senate district, which includes a swath of five counties between Eau Claire and Superior along the Minnesota border.

Trump won there by 17 points in 2016. A special election was triggered when Gov. Scott Walker tapped a popular state senator, who had held the seat since 2000, to become his agriculture secretary. Last night, Democratic candidate Patty Schachtner won by nine points.

-- Wisconsin conservative talk radio legend Charlie Sykes, a Trump critic, called the results ominous and said his prominent friends inside the GOP are freaking out:

Genuinely stunning setback for GOP in Wisconsin. Hard to overstate the anxiety this will cause...

Of the 5 state legislature special elections tonight, the democrats leave with a gain of +1. That gain being #SD10 in Wisconsin. GOP held onto seats in SC, Iowa as well as #AD58 in Wisconsin though margins decreased in all. Democrats held onto WI #AD66 as well. #FlipItBlue

#AD58 sits in the mid of the reddest County in WI & one of the reddest outside the south. A result like this proves @WisDems & @dnc as a whole.

4 elections in deeply Trump districts tonight. All saw huge swing toward Dems compared to 2016 pres results. Using @dkelections district #s:

SC #HD99: +15% net swing toward Dems
IA #HD06: +18%
WI #SD10: +24% or +27%
WI #AD58: +25%
