FBI investigating whether Russian money went to NRA to help Trump
Source: McClatchy
The FBI is investigating whether a top Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter have told McClatchy.
FBI counterintelligence investigators have focused on the activities of Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russias central bank who is known for his close relationships with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and the NRA, the sources said.
It is illegal to use foreign money to influence federal elections.

Disclosure of the Torshin investigation signals a new dimension in the 18-month-old FBI probe of Russias interference. McClatchy reported a year ago that a multi-agency U.S. law enforcement and counterintelligence investigation into Russias intervention, begun even before the start of the 2016 general election campaign, initially included a focus on whether the Kremlin secretly helped fund efforts to boost Trump, but little has been said about that possibility in recent months.

Cardin and other committee Democrats just issued an important call for protecting our democracy that's been taken note of by many, Putins Asymmetrical Assault on Democracy in Russia and Europe: Implications for U.S. National Security.

Conspicuously absent from the report, however, is Republican buy-in.

Btw, this is also a big, aggressive political move against the Republicans as more and more of their entanglements with Russia are being uncovered.

(7,182 posts)NRA going to Russia for that field trip. NRA having tens of millions of dollars more to give to 2016 election -
From the article:
"However, the NRA reported spending a record $55 million on the 2016 elections, including $30 million to support Trump triple what the group devoted to backing Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential race. Most of that was money was spent by an arm of the NRA that is not required to disclose its donors.
Two people with close connections to the powerful gun lobby said its total election spending actually approached or exceeded $70 million. The reporting gap could be explained by the fact that independent groups are not required to reveal how much they spend on Internet ads or field operations, including get-out-the-vote efforts."
Also from article - in May 2016, Russian known mobster and money launderer Torshin spoke to Donald Trump Jr. at NRA national convention. Lots of connections back and forth between Torshin, Trump campaign and NRA.
NRA also gave millions to other campaigns, Rubio, Burr, many others. Most money is outside spending.
Good piece on nature of spending - http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2017/oct/11/counting-up-how-much-nra-spends/

NRA Gives $3.6 Million to Walker, Legislators
Just one Democrat benefits from gun lobbys generous donations.
By Wisconsin Democracy Campaign - Oct 5th, 2017 11:10 am
Most of the spending, about $3.5 million, was by the NRA on outside electioneering to help Walker win his 2010 general, 2012 recall and 2014 reelection bids. Walker also received $22,500 in direct campaign contributions from pro-gun interests the most of any legislative or statewide candidate between January 2008 and June 2017.
In addition to Walker, current legislators received about $92,400 (see table below) in outside electioneering support and direct campaign contributions from the NRAs political action committees and corporation, between January 2008 and June 2017. All but $500 went to support GOP legislators.
During much of the same time, Walker and GOP legislators, who took control of state government in January 2011, have approved numerous pro-gun bills led by states concealed carry law.
More recently, last month, a state Senate committee recommended passage of a proposal, Senate Bill 169, which would allow adults to carry concealed weapons in Wisconsin without a permit. ....................

(11,432 posts)All that matters is whether or not federal laws were broken by the NRA. Supporters of the NRA can get over it (or not). It's their choice. The FBI will (and should) continue to do its job and pursue the investigation wherever the facts lead. When all is said and done, I believe the evidence will show widespread foreign influence in U. S. elections, and our democracy has paid a high price.

The laugh-because-you-don't-want-to-cry irony of the NRA being punked is the gun-worshippers oft-stated creed that they are defending our freedoms. What they need to do is contemplate the First Amendment and use their brains.

(4,490 posts)WASHINGTON A conservative operative trumpeting his close ties to the National Rifle Association and Russia told a Trump campaign adviser last year that he could arrange a back-channel meeting between Donald J. Trump and Vladimir V. Putin, the Russian president, according to an email sent to the Trump campaign.
A May 2016 email to the campaign adviser, Rick Dearborn, bore the subject line Kremlin Connection. In it, the N.R.A. member said he wanted the advice of Mr. Dearborn and Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, then a foreign policy adviser to Mr. Trump and Mr. Dearborns longtime boss, about how to proceed in connecting the two leaders.
Russia, he wrote, was quietly but actively seeking a dialogue with the U.S. and would attempt to use the N.R.A.s annual convention in Louisville, Ky., to make first contact. The email, which was among a trove of campaign-related documents turned over to investigators on Capitol Hill, was described in detail to The New York Times.
