Schwarzenegger to Trump: 'Don't touch California. If you want to drill, do it off Mar-a-Lago'
Source: LA Times
Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday blasted President Trumps move to allow increased offshore drilling, saying he ought to drill in the waters off his Palm Beach, Fla., resort rather than California.
Dont touch California. If you want to drill, do it off Mar-a-Lago, Schwarzenegger tweeted. Or better yet, look to the future, follow CAs lead & go green and we can all breathe easier. The USs largest economy is nearly 50% renewable. #ProtectThePacific
Our fishing, tourism, and recreation industries employ hundreds of thousands of great people. Our coasts are an economic gold mine. Do not put them at risk, Schwarzenegger added in a second tweet.

(4,266 posts)The oceans here are home to precious coral reefs and various other sea dwellers. They're also a vital part of Florida's economy. One rig busts and spills into the ocean, and the state could be ruined. Hell, just having the things present could do its harm. Our beaches, scuba diving, etc are some of our main attractions.
That said, I can understand the sentiment. In his position, I wouldn't want it as the governor of a coastal state, either.

California Governor Takes Heat for Offshore Drilling Proposal
June 3, 2009
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger tried to beat back criticism Monday of a proposal he made in last month's fiscal revisions aimed at reversing the state's worsening budget crisis by securing an additional $100 million of annual revenues from the limited opening of drilling offshore Santa Barbara. Schwarzenegger's proposal was tied to the dismantling of four existing offshore platforms in the area.
The Tranquillon Ridge lease approval by the governor would open state-owned tidelands and submerged lands in the coastal area off Santa Barbara in a move that is estimated to be worth $1.8 billion in extra revenues to the state during the next 14 years, or about $100 million for this fiscal year.
"To set the record straight," Schwarzenegger's office issued a "myth-vs.-fact" statement on the offshore drilling line item that he said is a "vehicle to bring new revenues into the state and end oil drilling off Santa Barbara's coast." The proposal is "strongly supported" by environmental groups, according to Schwarzengger's spokesperson, and will benefit the state now and speed the permanent removal of drilling platforms from the Santa Barbara coastline.
Schwarzenegger argued that contrary to what his critics say, this would not be the first oil lease in California coastal waters in 40 years, it has not "bypassed" the normal environmental reviews, and it is not a reversal of what the governor promised when he was first elected.

(7,640 posts)I understand your point of view. I'd rather see organizations that are doing the real environmental work dominate the news cycle.

(89,247 posts)i see nothing wrong with him promoting the right policies . in fact a lot of people may still see him as just the terminator so if he can get attention to it it's a good thing.

(19,233 posts)Like he realized just how out of touch his beliefs were when he saw how damaging his policies were to the state. Contrast that with our movie star governor, Jesse Ventura, and you can see that Ventura has only become MORE of an asshole with age.
Since leaving office, he's put out so many messages promoting the left that I can't help but like him again.

He was brutal to CA and I don't see that he has switched political parties -- he's still a rethug. He has major character issues on top of that.
I'd rather see statements from environmental organizations being elevated to headline news.
