North Korea sends rare announcement to all Koreans, calls for unification

Source: Reuters

Reuters•January 24, 2018

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea sent a rare announcement addressed to "all Koreans at home and abroad" on Thursday, saying they should make a "breakthrough" for unification without the help of other countries, its state media said.

It said all Koreans should "promote contact, travel, cooperation between North and South Korea" while adding Pyongyang will "smash" all challenges against reunification of the Korean peninsula.

The announcement, issued after a joint meeting of government and political parties, added Koreans should wage an energetic drive to defuse the acute military tension and create a peaceful climate on the Korean peninsula.

Military tension on the Korean peninsula was a "fundamental obstacle" for the improvement of inter-Korean relations and unification, the North's official news agency said.

2. North Korea will only accept reunification if the whole peninsula adopts its government

South Korea also wants reunification - badly enough that they have an entire government agency devoted to it:

but South Korea will not accept a reunification that leaves it under North Korean rule.

As sticking points go, this one's a doozy.

Hell, set him and his family up with their own reality show. He's might not be so dumb- the alternative for him is not going to be good if the war gets got, he's young enough.

At this point, the north and south have evolved into two very different societies. The culture is different, the outlook, the politics. How on earth do you unify a democratic society and a totalitarian dictatorship, particularly without the latter trying to take over?

As brainwashed as many people in the north are, I just don't know how they could manage to reintegrate into a single society while respecting the new cultural differences on both sides. I'd hope they could find a way, though. Better the pursuit of peace than the tensions of potential war.

Supposedly, the NK people are quite aware that the outside world does not reflect the propaganda that's inflicted on them.
