Man shot at Oregon veterans clinic during altercation

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A man said to be a military veteran seeking mental health care was shot by a security officer at a Veterans Affairs clinic in southern Oregon on Thursday after an admissions area altercation in which authorities said the man became combative.

The man was flown to a hospital after the shooting in the southwestern community of White City with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, the Jackson County sheriff's office said in a statement.

Shawn Quall, an Army veteran of the first Gulf War who is from Bend, Oregon, said he heard the man shouting before the situation escalated.

"I was walking down the main hallway when I overheard a veteran yelling at intake people that he was here for the fifth time trying to get health care, and was upset at what he thought was a runaround," Quall told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

At least the cop didn't empty his clip like most of them do. There are signs at the door that say no weapons of any kind allowed in a v a. Facility. This cop better prove he had a knife? You can't shot someone just because someone yells he has a knife. Was he physically combative or just verbally combative? The link is very vague. As a veteran I don't take it lightly that a vet in trouble or need is fucking shot.

2. I'm a vet and my son is a vet of Iraq with PSTD. He had a hard time getting help for two reasons....

he was angry and bad tempered and would miss appointments and just show up randomly. His best friend, a marine who was separated with him at the same time borrowed Jame's shot gun and you can guess the rest. And until several years ago the Army required PSTD claims to be filed prior to separation. This would have added several more weeks to his enlistment to which had already been added 11 months "stop loss". He had several bad encounters with police before he finally got it that making appointments and keeping them were critical and the requirements were changed as to when a vet opens a PTSD claim. He is finally doing well and living in Alaska.

The point is that VA is tied by Congress as to how much service and the intensity it provides and Congress that uses VA as a political football. Remember the Trump official who resigned this week - he believes 75% of PSTD claims are bogus. So there are a lot of things not the VA that color the treatment of a vet.

My personal experience with VA started when I was separated in '73. I worked for VA and I told my wife on day one to PLEASE not leave me at VA if my health ever got bad.

30 years later I went back to VA after the economy took my job and my great insurance. What a difference. They are fighting my cancer aggressively and in a timely manner. I recommend VA to every vet and feel it would be a great model for a form of universal healthcare. I LOVE my socialized medical treatment.

This vet was angry? Big deal, that's a well known symptom of PTSD. If he didn't hurt anyone and was just angry he should not have been shot. Cops today always take the kill shot when a shot in the leg would usually stop people.
The v a has saved my life. I go there for everything even though I have private insurance. I feel welcome and I am comfortable around my brothers in arms. It's the best.

the fact that Austin/Temple Va services are among the best in the VA system. Like you, VA is doing everything to save my life, and they did everything they could to get James treatment and get his life on the road and it worked. I think without VA James would have died or ended up dead in prison or the streets.

I especially agree with you about being with brothers and sisters and being treated by brothers and sisters, its hard to explain that to non vets but its important to me that I am understood by the understanding.
