Trump needles 'monster' Chuck Todd at off-the-record anchors' lunch

Source: Politico

The president used his traditional pre-State of the Union sit-down to air his grievances with news coverage of his presidency, again.

By MICHAEL CALDERONE 01/30/2018 05:51 PM EST

Hours before his first formal State of the Union address, President Donald Trump gathered top news anchors at the White House and vented his spleen.

The president took a needling tone with Chuck Todd, the host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” telling the group that Todd’s the nicest guy in the world until he gets on the show and then becomes “a monster.”

He had a more pointed exchange with NBC News anchor Lester Holt regarding a May 2017 interview in which the president said he considered the “Russia thing” when deciding to fire former FBI director James Comey. The president accused Holt of editing the interview to remove Trump comments the president claimed were almost “Shakespearean,” according to attendees. Holt responded that the entire interview ran online.

Trump, who starred in NBC’s “The Apprentice,” also commented during the lunch about how much money he made for the network and suggested the company’s brass, rather than the specific journalists, were to blame for coverage he doesn’t like.

2. The concept that Trump is comparing himself to Shakespeare is amusing.

From the article cited in OP

some kind of wicked mix of Hamlet, King Lear, and Midsummer Night's Dream
i do like to think the bard would have conceived more memorable lines for his debauched power-mad orange fool, perhaps kept Bannon around for a few more scenes as drunken comedy relief, but i guess we'll just have to live with these shameful disasters as history provides them to us off the shelf, crappy dialog and low-budget special effects galore.

8. When has Chuck Todd ever said anything remotely anti-Trump?

Now that Matt Lauer is gone, I think Todd is probably the most pro-Trump commentator on NBC. Am I right?

During the campaign Todd was careful not to lean either way, that I noticed. But he's definitely been taking Trump's side when meeting with the more liberal/progressive guests on his show. Maybe he just does that to keep the conversation going. I don't dislike the guy, but I can't see what Cheeto is complaining about.

He should be all over Lawrence O'Donnell or Rachel Maddow, who both completely shred him every night on their shows. Really, Rachel has hammered the Russia investigation since even before the inauguration. She was one of the first to do it too.

it's no wonder you cannot face a real journalist and resort to name calling.
Coward.

with Trump? I don't think you can maintain objectivity when you're chumming around with people you're covering. I don't care if this is a traditional pre-SOTU thing or not.
