Florida House votes down motion to take up weapons ban with Douglas students present
Source: WPLG
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - On their first full day lobbying Florida lawmakers in Tallahassee to change the state's gun laws, students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School quickly learned change does not happen very fast in government, if at all.
With Douglas students in the gallery Tuesday, the Florida House voted down a motion to take up a ban on assault weapons such as the AR-15 used by Nikolas Cruz when he killed 17 people at the school on Valentine's Day.
The final motion vote was 36-71.
Democratic Rep. Kionne McGhee asked for a procedural move that would have allowed it to consider the bill to ban assault rifles and large capacity magazines. The bill had been assigned to three committees but was not scheduled for a hearing. The committees won't meet again before the legislative session ends March 9.

(3,194 posts)I applaud the efforts of these students in trying to fight the good fight. But they are about to realize, that just because they're vocal, fired up, and being supported by those in favor of gun control, does not mean any change is going to happen. Being right is not good enough.
The politicians don't care about a brain damaged Gabby Giffords, they don't care about slaughtered kindergarten children, or Batman movie watchers, or Pulse Nightclub dancers.....or a bunch of high school students who just witnessed 17 of their friends and teachers lying in pools of blood.

(7,410 posts)So, does anyone want to know why the current system of governance yields less than a voting percentage of 50%? Does anyone understand why the US public is generally apathetic about the political process? Does anyone understand HOW Trumpy got to be president?
All of your answers are embedded in the story of a busload full of kids going to Tallahassee to demand legislation against gun violence.

(3,171 posts)Voting is mandatory, and Election Day is a national holiday. It's infuriating when people piss and moan about the government, but when you ask them who they voted for, they either stare at you blankly or hurriedly try to change the subject.

(7,410 posts)Therefore, pay to play. No, voting doesn't count. Political pressure doesn't count. No one will listen.
But if you've got millions to toss around, you're a player. And THEN you count.
I hate this system. For 50 years I've hated the system that demands money instead of votes. The high school kids at Parkland are right. They're morally right, they're rationally right, and they're spiritually right. That righteousness also means that, under their current status, they are nobodies. Politicians don't want them around. They're disturbing, because they speak truth to power. So they need to be sent home, because those in power don't want to deal with the truth of gun violence. That's because they get money from the NRA. And the NRA tells them to shut up. So they do.

The Florida House should have been required to look at those before voting.

(6,965 posts)MOST don't care about the quality of life outside of their OWN lives. Those kids gotta grow a steel of spine to get down and dirty in the sludge put that is the GOP if they're gonna make a dent in the POWER that the NRA has over them (GOP). These kids are not going to back off or shut up, so there's that thankfully
But as it stands now, I don't see anything being done in a legislative way being done about gun violence anytime soon. thuglicans have all of the power and these kids can't vote .... YET. But then again even if they do vote, will their votes be counted fairly by thuglicans? We know that something always goes wrong down there in Florida as it relates to voting where Democrats are concerned, and thuglicans control every apparatus of voting from the collecting and tallying of votes there. Plus, thuglicans NOW have the help of their friends the ruskies (Who this DOJ won't stop from meddling in our 2018 mid-terms) if they can't do all of the things they wanted to do to get rid of Democratic votes.
