U.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that arming teachers could help prevent massacres such as last weeks mass shooting at a Florida high school.
Trump voiced support for the idea during an emotional White House meeting with students who survived the shooting and a parent whose child did not.
If you had a teacher ... who was adept at firearms, it could very well end the attack very quickly, said Trump, who acknowledged the idea would be controversial.

(4,341 posts)until a crazy teacher ends up shooting all the kids in his/her class...more guns is the solution...right! Why not arm the kids while you are at it?

(12,582 posts)I read somewhere that arming every teacher in the U.S. would create an "army" larger than all the combined police departments in the country.
Nowhere in a teacher's contract does it say he or she should be willing to lay down their lives for their students. Nor should it.
This spring the DHS is planning to release an active shooter training simulator for teachers, which puts them in a virtual shooting incident to prepare for a real one.
The article shows what the simulator looks like in action (scroll down). It's scary to think that this would be part of a teacher's training, along with live-fire practice.
Finally, there's the matter of having a gun in the classroom. My experience with students is that they know where everything is in the classroom, and can get to it in an instant. Having armed teachers is an accident waiting to happen.

(6,547 posts)I would want nothing to do with this plan. Teachers are trained to teach, not to kill. I know how to handle a gun and am good at it but I have trouble shooting an animal let alone killing a human. A classroom under stress is the wrong place to get "on the job" experience in killing while your class is left on their own to deal with the shooter however they can. On non-shooting days, I would not want the responsibility of securing a gun in my classroom. I've had pretty talented kids pick the lock on my desk drawer to retrieve items they wanted over the years I was in the classroom. In my mind it is just putting one more gun into the mix and additional stress on the teacher who is already dealing with stress from multiple directions. Lousy plan, if you ask me.

(14,337 posts)All had criminal records of one sort or another. They were one infraction away from being locked up in a facility. One boy at 11 years old tried to stab his Grandma with a kitchen knife.
We locked up all sharp objects which could be used as weapons. They did their lessons with crayons. That boy broke into a drawer, got a scissors, and tried to stab the other TA with it. Of course, we needed a loaded gun in that classroom. Anyone who says that, needs some serious counseling themselves.

(14,308 posts)No one is proposing forcing teachers to be armed as far as I've seen.
Districts who have done this have had a select number of trained teachers who are willing to do it.
Here are the rules of one local district near me...

(109 posts)I have other ideas. Here's one: How about more cars on the highways so as to reduce the number of casualties from horrendous traffic accidents? Fill those highways with so many cars that there won't be room for cars to have accidents. They'd have to be really really careful.
So many of Trump's ideas are just so intelligent and well thought out. He's a genius. How do you get the Russians to quit subverting our elections? Make friends with them and help them to feel more comfortable around Americans. Defend their actions at every turn. These are the kind of policies that only a genius would ever dare to say. Most people would never think of them.

(1,366 posts)is to just start recruiting our teachers from the ranks of our military, or that armed service should be a mandatory teacher employment requirement. Let's just get down to it and make it easy on everyone. And while we are at it, these teachers can teach military tactics to their charges. ...

(22,669 posts)Or, let's propose all teachers and faculty carry firearms. School lets out and Cruz simply decides to wait off campus as students mill out.
He still has his clips and his legally purchased fully armed AR-15. tRump's armed teachers are out of place and Cruz kills 17 more innocent children and faculty.
Next brilliant idea? Perhaps we need another WH listening session. Sorry kids. We'll keep trying until we get this right.
