TUCSON, Ariz.
A Tucson-area couple were arrested and jailed on suspicion of child abuse after authorities say four children were allegedly locked in separate rooms for up to 12 hours at a time with no access to food, water, lights or bathroom facilities.
Benito Gutierrez, 69, and Carol Gutierrez, 64, were each held on $25,000 bond Wednesday, according to Tucson News Now.
The sheriffs department said deputies went to the home Saturday in response to a 911 call from a store clerk after a boy asked to use the phones store. Deputies said the boy had left the home through a bedroom window and was in a disheveled condition.
Authorities stated the couple's four adopted children, ages 6 to 12, were found in horrific conditions.

(1,356 posts)Both of our children were adopted (one domestic and one international) and I remember going through many interviews, background checks, fingerprinting, social work visits, etc. before the adoptions were permitted to go forward.
In fact, if I remember correctly, I believe a social worker even interviewed our son (who would have been two at the time) to get an idea how we were as parents before we adopted his sister.
Our adoptions were done in Maryland, so perhaps there are different standards in each state.
And I also want to say that my wife and I were both glad of the scrutiny - as we told our friends and family at the time: These people don't know us, and they want to be sure we will be good parents before entrusting us with a child.
I just don't understand how someone can treat anyone (especially their own children) so cruelly.
