UPDATED: Trump: Give Bonuses to Armed Teachers
Source: The Daily Beast
President Trump on Thursday floated the idea of offering a little bit of a bonus for teachers who are trained and armed. You cant hire enough security guards... but you could have concealed [carry weapons] on the teachers, the president said, per pool reports. He added that he wants schools to be protected like how banks are protected, and wanted teachers go through rigorous training to harden our sites. He also said that people like to blame the NRA and said he supported long-gun purchase age restrictions, asserting it should all be 21, before declaring that the NRA would support it (they currently oppose it).

UPDATE:
Trump emphasizes arming teachers and cracking down on violent movies as response to school shootings

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday emphasized that he wants to see trained teachers able to carry concealed guns to ward off potential school shooters, and said he has recently spoken with the National Rifle Association about his ideas.
During an hour-long meeting with state and local officials on school safety in the wake of last weeks mass shooting in Florida, Trump brushed aside a suggestion of mandatory active-shooter drills for schools, and said he did not like the idea of having more armed guards in schools.
Trump also said he wanted to explore the idea of reopening closed mental institutions and said violence in movies watched by children should also be examined.

(32,633 posts)They're already secretly back-channeling $ millions into the hidden coffers at the NRA (with no paper trail.)
No thanks, we can see what their blood money has done to this country.
We must BAN military assault rifles now, and confiscate the ones that are already in the hands of non-military Americans. There's no reason for any non-military Americans to have an AR-15 or any other assault weapon in their possession.

(41,831 posts)so having an assault weapon is kind of silly, Than again someone could say that about my beautiful Katanas from Japan.

(7,527 posts)Teachers deserve bonuses, but not because they're packing heat and are trained to kill.
And fuck him for even modifying it with "a little bit of"...some coins to pay your CostCo membership is not worth dealing with the added stress of a firearm at your waist while teaching World Geography.

(2,199 posts)when they are my 11-12th grade World Geography/World History students that barely know where their home state is on the map much less a state above, below or beside our home state.....I have way too much to do with my classes than be watching for shooters on campus or engaging them in the hallway outside my classroom.... Arming teachers is so stupid. Ask any combat vet....oh yeah, I'm an Afghanistan combat vet....No guns in my school!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(23,307 posts)Schools would have to carry liability insurance that would never be affordable or reasonable if teachers carry firearms. That and teacher's unions would have to negotiate hazard pay. There's no way this would fly and we have to make sure it does not.

(23,307 posts)that this is the norm in some districts. I am curious how the cost of this is absorbed by schools, unions etc. I cant imagine insurance companies would write policies for this nonsense.

(14,308 posts)I am most familiar with Forsan ISD in Forsan, Texas.
They call it the "Guardian Program."
A select number (carefully not revealed) of teachers and staff are armed. They are given special training and are not paid. It's voluntary.
When you get out of your car in the parking lot, the first thing you will notice is a big billboard in front of each entrance. It says something like, "Be warned. The staff of this school are armed and will use whatever force is necessary to protect our children."
I only know about it because I did an in-service at the school for the teachers. Obviously the signage surprised me and I asked questions about it. From what the teachers said it has been a non-controversial program with most in the community grateful there's some protection for their kids at school. From meeting the teachers, I could probably guess who the armed ones are. There were some former military types now teaching.
I see teachers saying if the admin forced them to arm themselves, they'd quit. I don't think anyone, especially gun nuts want to force second grade teachers who have never held a gun to come to school armed. On the other hand, I bet most schools probably have some former cops, or former military that would be willing to serve on the emergency brigade.
I don't have much opinion on the program other than they seem happy with it and it seems to work for them. I don't lklive there. My kids are too old for school. To me, the community knows better than I do as an outsider.
Here's a little info.

(4,999 posts)Yes, the teacher -- the only threat to the shooter. Shooter has AR15, teacher has handgun. Shooter has surprise advantage.
What teacher in their right mind would even *want* that scenario?
And then there's the teachers without concealed weapons.
The only possible winner is the gun manufacturers who would sell even more guns.
How about we just outlaw assualt weapons in the first place? Geeze the correct solution is so freaking obvious.

(4,450 posts)In the end it's all about placating the NRA, and the NRA exists for one actual purpose: as the lobbying arm for the gun industry, the NRA's one and only real job is to maximize gun sales.
The AR-15 is a great seller- you think they want to see that taken off the shelves? No, they just want you to THINK it's coming off the shelves, so you quick run out and buy one. This is why the NRA loves mass shootings- the bump in gun sales when Hannity starts screeching about gun grabbers coming to your town!

(273 posts)Would it cover the legal fees accrued by the teacher from the lawsuit(s) filed by parent(s) of innocent children who were accidentally shot by the teacher in all of the chaos, as they were running for their lives?!?!? Would not that compound the grief of the teachers and parents alike to know that their child was accidentally shot by a well-intended teacher because of this ridiculous proposal?

muriel_volestrangler
(101,306 posts)If anyone seems to have had their morals distorted by stories of guns solving everything, it's the NRA and Trump. They're the kind of people who see "D-Fens" in Falling Down as a hero:
...
In the the movie's most famous scene, Foster arrives at fast food restaurant three minutes after breakfast has finished and pulls out a machine gun when they refuse to serve him. He declares to the terrified customers: "I'm just standing up for my rights as a consumer." It is a twisted take on middle-class white entitlement under threat.
To its credit, the movie portrays Foster's entitlement mostly as self-deception. When the police finally stop him, he asks incredulously, "So I'm the bad guy?" When informed that yes, he is the bad guy, he responds pathetically "I did everything they told me to."
Falling Down is about a toxic mixture of self-pity and the hunger for order. But both the movie's creators believed that a man like William Foster was an anachronism; the world had passed him by. They were wrong. Donald Trump has tapped into a certain resentment toward the cultural shifts afoot in the U.S., and it is enough, probably, to launch him at least to become the Republican party's nominee.

(1,134 posts)I live 5-minutes from Wright-Patterson AFB, the world's largest, occupying 11.8 square miles and with over 27,000 employees. Or as The Orange Buffoon would call it, a giant Soft Target, since no guns are allowed within its fences. Yet in my 29 years with the AF, and 14 years since, there has not been a single shooting there. So I'm guessing The Dumpster and the NRA would like to arm everyone, so they would be safer? What could possibly go wrong?
