Rep. Rooney: Hicks story shows Russia probe must end

(CNN)Republican Rep. Tom Rooney is calling for an end to the House Intelligence Committee's investigation into possible collusion in Russia's 2016 election meddling, arguing that its only purpose is to drive the media narrative for Democrats.
Rooney, a member of the committee, slammed his Democratic colleagues for leaking former White House communications director Hope Hicks' testimony, where she admitted to telling white lies for President Donald Trump.
"That's why tonight I've asked our Chairman (Mike) Conaway that we need to end this investigation," he told CNN's Erin Burnett on "OutFront." "It's been going on for a year. We've interviewed scores of witnesses and now we've gotten to the point now where we're literally bringing people in for nine hours just so the Democrats can leak to the press something as ridiculous as 'white lies.' "
The Florida Republican added that when pressed, Hicks said she never lied about anything substantive, like the Russia investigation.........................

Except she did! She was involved in penning the AirForce One memo/announcement, in which Donald Trump tried to cover for Donald Trump Jr's Trump Tower meeting with several Russians to "get dirt on Hillary".

(32,328 posts)Ms. Hicks may have her reasons for quitting, and maybe she would have done so even if she hadn't been interviewed by the Committee. She's also lawyering up and getting ready for a subpoena from Robert Mueller.
The fact is that Hope Hicks was never qualified for her high-level White House position to begin with, and probably never had a security clearance to read top secret classified documents that were daily coming to her from all over. Do we feel sorry for her now? Heck no!
Is this a reason to end the Trussian investigation? Absolutely not.

(6,911 posts)If you were already planning on quitting, announcing the day after you were questioned by the committee is not the work of a good communications director. It just is not good management of information, which is her job.

(32,328 posts)... but who knows if that's true?
Supposedly she's upset at the treatment of Rob Porter who was fired a couple weeks ago when the media reported domestic abuse charges, and apparently they weren't the first charges against him either.
So she was planning to quit anyway, but now she has suddenly realized how much trouble she's in because of Trussia. Did that honestly never occur to her until NOW? If so, she's in way over her clueless head.
God bless your little heart, Hope. I hope you get a good lawyer who doesn't take you to the cleaners.

She gets interviewed by Mueller a week ago, then quits moments after being interviewed by the House.
1 + 1 = ????
She is smarter and tougher than people might think, but never having met her, seeing how precious she likes to keep herself, I can say with 100% certainty that faced with having to spend so much as a second in an orange DOC jumpshoot, she will get into self preservation mode REAL quick.

(58,724 posts)Our investigation into the terrorist attack in Benghazi isnt about finger pointing; this is about figuring out what went wrong so we can prevent future attacks. We need stronger leadership at the State Department, we need the Administration to heed warnings from the intelligence community, and we need significantly better security at our diplomatic posts around the world.

(19,756 posts)taken seriously. What I mean by that is they could have formally subpoenaed Hicks and Bannon and forced them to answer questions or else suffer being jailed. But as the Rethugs are the leaders of all of those committees, they intentionally choose not to exert their powers to force testimony, so ppl like Hope Hicks go there and tell "white lies".
In the current environment, only serious investigation is that of Mueller.

(4,358 posts)And didn't all of the intelligence chiefs just testify that Russia is already interfering in 2018 and they haven't been instructed to do anything about it?
So how does Hope Hicks having a rough day and quitting justify shutting down an investigation with those kinds of implications? I would suggest even calling for the investigation to shut down in the face of that kind of testimony would be collusion with a hostile foreign power.

(12,536 posts)It's not like we haven't had investigations that have lasted more than that -- especially Benghazi.
source:USA Today
I would think an attack on the very foundations of our democracy would rate at least as much time as the Benghazi witch hunt. So far this investigation has produced multiple indictments and guilty pleas, with is more than the Republicans were able to generate in two years and four months.
Hell, the attacks on 9-11 rated nineteen months of investigation, even after Bush/Cheney threatened the Congress with retribution if they did so, which delayed the start of the investigation for more than a full year. (As a comparison, NASA's investigation into the Columbia shuttle tragedy began the day after the accident.) They also gimmicked the committee so there were more Republicans than Democrats, which wasn't the equal division of members the parties had planned. This made it nearly impossible for the Democrats to subpoena witnesses -- sound familiar? (Bush/Cheney had wanted Henry Kissinger to head the commission until the hue and cry that went up forced them to withdraw the idea.)
As the Mueller investigation continues to produce results -- and follows the money to Trump and his family -- we can expect the Republicans to scream louder and louder about how long it's taking. I think the correct response is, "Benghazi!"
