Flake on Trump's 'take the guns' remark: 'He misspoke'

Source: Politico

By AYANNA ALEXANDER 03/01/2018 09:32 AM EST

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said Thursday that President Donald Trump "misspoke" a day earlier when he said he'd prefer to "take the guns first" and worry about due process later when dealing with people who could pose a danger to society.

Trump made the comments Wednesday at a bipartisan meeting on school safety aimed at preventing attacks like the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.

"A lot of times, by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court to get the due process procedures," Trump said. “Take the guns first, go through due process second."

Flake, who was at the meeting, said he heard the comment, but he essentially gave Trump a pass, telling CBS News on Thursday that everyone should just “move ahead” and not dwell on the remark, which veered well away from typical Republican views on gun rights.

6. I'm sure Republicans would've "moved ahead and not dwelled on the remark" if Obama had said it

Or Hillary.

Probably Sean Hannity wouldn't even mention it on his show.

was told he's not a politician so he's just figuring things out. He's had a year! "Why do it out loud?", I asked. "That's just how he works."

Cue the White House answer: "We want to correct the record, the president never misspeaks. Also, he has the best words."

10. So Trump said he will be taking your guns, but that's okay?

A little slip of the tongue (repeated, of course)?

Whereas Obama said he would NOT be taking people's guns and there was a gun-buying panic.
