Ben Carson says he wants to cancel $31,000 dining room furniture order

Source: CNN

By Rene Marsh, CNN

Updated 11:31 AM ET, Thu March 1, 2018

Washington (CNN) - Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson is requesting that the order for a $31,000 dining set be canceled, according to a statement provided exclusively to CNN by longtime adviser Armstrong Williams.

"I was as surprised as anyone to find out that a $31,000 dining set had been ordered," Carson said in the statement. "I have requested that the order be canceled. We will find another solution for the furniture replacement."

Carson also said his wife, Candy Carson, had "asked if used furniture was an option," the first time there's been an indication that she was involved in the process. "My wife also looked at catalogs and wanted to be sure that the color of the chair fabric of any set that was chosen matched the rest of the decor," he wrote.

"I made it known that I was not happy about the prices being charged and that my preference would be to find something more reasonable," he added.

Are these people so fucking ignorant that they don't realize that dining room chair seats are easily recovered? They are made to be easy to take off and recover. All you really need is a screwdriver and a staple gun. I've done it several times.

You do NOT select a dining room set based on the color of the chair seats. EVER.

She also had "touch on" brass lamps (we called it 'mood' lighting), a desk where she could sit on either side, just in case she wanted to look out the window. It all sat on top of a huge oriental rug.

She left, and before they could hire another boss, the department replaced the stuff with serviceable Steel Case office furniture and turned most of that space into 2 walled cubbies like the rest of us use.

I honestly think he was placed there to ensure funds would be mismanaged, followed by public outrage, followed by defunding HUD leaving federal housing to the whims of private for profit developers.

A week before Ben Carson was confirmed as secretary of Housing and Urban Development, a career official at the agency complained to a colleague about the hours she had to spend curtailing plans to redecorate his office.

Helen Foster, then HUD's chief administration officer, wrote in an email that she had to answer "endless questions about why I won't fund more than the $5000 limit" for redecorating the office. "I do like 3 meetings a day on that," she wrote on Feb. 22, 2017. "I hate this."

Foster was transferred to a new position in July, and she later told a watchdog agency that she believed she was demoted in retaliation for concerns she expressed about office expenses and potential violations of open-records laws. Foster said she had been excluded from handling Freedom of Information Act requests filed by the Democratic National Committee — even though she oversaw department FOIA responses as part of her duties — because one of President Trump's appointees believed she was a Democrat.

On Tuesday, HUD spokesman Raffi Williams denied that the department overspent to redecorate Carson's office, saying that used chairs were brought up from a basement and that blinds were replaced at a cost of $3,400. Williams said he could not address the specific allegations in Foster's complaint, including her charges that the redecorating effort was spurred by Carson's wife, Candy, and that the Democrats' FOIA requests received special treatment.

From Feb 5, 2018:

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson on Friday said that he and his family were "under attack by the media questioning our integrity and ethics," after reports shed light on the extensive involvement that his family members -- especially his son, Benjamin Jr. -- played in official business, despite strong warnings from agency lawyers.
"This week, my family and I have been under attack by the media questioning our integrity and ethics. I have openly asked for an independent investigation to rest these unfounded biases," Carson said in a statement posted to his social media accounts.

The emails also suggest that Candy Carson, Ben Carson's wife, pushed for her son to meet with at least one Cabinet-level official. In May 2017, Sheila Greenwood, Carson's chief of staff, reached out to another HUD staffer regarding a meeting between Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Carson Jr., a meeting suggested by Candy Carson. Greenwood gave the HUD staffer the email address of Chao's chief of staff, saying that the person "would be able to connect BJ and the Secretary should you choose to pursue."
The exchange appeared to give Carson Jr.'s access to a top-level official whose agency oversees an area relevant to his business interests. It is unclear whether Carson Jr. contacted Chao.

I'm sure HUD, like all federal agencies, has to use GSA for office purchases. 31k seems excessive, but 5k seems like not enough money for even a moderate update.
