Police: Man spits on black child, calls him racial slur

Source: CBS NEWS

CBS NEWS March 2, 2018, 8:53 PM

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas -- Authorities say a man allegedly spit on a black child and called him a racial slur Monday night at a Hooters restaurant in Overland Park, Kansas. The alleged incident began when the child wandered away from his family inside the restaurant Monday night and another customer used a racial slur and spit on the child, several witnesses told police.

"He basically said get that little 'blank' up off the floor. The n-word started to get thrown around," a witness who asked to remain anonymous told CBS Kansas City affiliate KCTV. The witness said he was dumbfounded by what the suspect told police who responded to the incident.

"I didn't catch what the officer said to him, but his immediate response was 'It's OK, I'm a fireman,' like that was supposed to blanket cover everything for him," the witness said.

In a statement, Overland Park Police Department clarified that the suspect is not a firefighter, but said they would pursue charges against the suspect relating to battery on a child.

kids wandering around a restaurant or being noisy in public doesn't particularly bother me. I have an acquaintance that I rarely see any more who is always completely intolerant of the slightest misbehavior of children in public, as if she was never a kid herself or never had her own child, who I suspect was very ill-behaved most of the time.

I am convinced that when my kids were young they were well behaved in public. Except that I have clear memories of times we left a restaurant because one of them was acting up. We did always try to go to noisy, family friendly restaurants, but even those don't need to be subject to a screaming kid.

Kids will be kids. Yeah, there are places you shouldn't be taking them, but no matter what, spitting and calling out racial slurs is never the right response.

Paper and crayons were the best.

I loved restaurants that had paper placements and some crayons, but I understood that the establishment was in the business of feeding people, not entertaining kids.

I will admit that I can sometimes be torn between what's normal kid behavior, and what's stuff the parents shouldn't be tolerating in the first place. It's a wide and fuzzy line.

depending on whether the kid was running, yelling, etc. Also the age of the kid, the younger the child the more forgiving I get. But honestly, when the behavior is totally over the top, it just starts to get funny.

Once, my daughter, my grandmother and I were at, (and I don't want to create a DU flame war here) let's just say, a certain Italian chain restaurant, having lunch. And the table next to us was exhibiting (to us) jaw droppingly shocking behavior. One kid standing on the chair and yelling. Parents putting spaghetti with tomato sauce ON THE TABLE for the baby to eat. Food on the floor in literally a two foot ring around the table. Another kid that would not sit in his seat, and would just run around, stop by the table, take a bite and take off again. But when the standing kid didn't want to eat her salad, and threw it, and a piece of lettuce landed on my grandmother's head, we couldn't help it and just burst out laughing. It was so ridiculous that we couldn't believe it was happening. They never apologized to us, or to the staff. When they left, they left what I consider a very average tip, and considering the state of that table, really substandard. The poor girl who had to clean up, walked over to the table, looked at it for a second, sighed heavily, and then started cleaning.

On edit: You know, the subthread brought up that funny memory (and my Grandmother is gone now) that I forgot about how outrageous the OP story was. Obviously, the man in the story was horrific and I'm glad he's being charged.

I don't think I ever witnessed anything that over the top. Even at their very worst my kids weren't like that. And I only had two, which helped.

Once they were old enough (as in at least 8 and 4) to be civilized, we'd have family conversations about such things as the conditions in the early Universe just after the Big Bang. I'm sure patrons who could hear us were quite nonplussed, but honest, sometimes that was the conversation.

The then 8 year old is now in a PhD program in astronomy. No surprise there.

By the way I’ve never spit on a child or, for that matter, ever thought about doing so. The father of that child, if justice exists, should have “beat the living shit” out of that racist prick. I will go out of my way, when in a public place and someone's child is misbehaving, to give them sympathy and let them know that it has happened to every parent.

It’s a good way for a waiter/waitress/child/other customers to get hot food spilled or glass broken on them when children get under foot.

This has nothing to do with the racist’s abhorrent behavior.

So, forgive me if I'm a little conservative when it comes to the health, safety & welfare of our children. The real question is: Why aren't you?

Monkeys living in trees do a better job of protecting their children than we do ours. And people like the villain in the OP are an obvious threat to our society, wouldn't you agree?

So how do we deal with them? They aren't evil. They don't have any psychological problems. They've just been taught that such anti-social behavior is acceptable - or even necessary. It's not.

And I'd think "we liberals" should be concerned about not only the villains' rights, but those of his victims as well. Maybe you should go visit those "conservative" sites that advocate attacking children.

So hard to believe they imagine themselves to be human beings, when they can't behave as human beings do.

It's painful to realize there are so many of them among, around us, that it's profitable for groups like Faux and Breitbart to even consider going into business, a nightmare to realize there are human-sized bags of flesh who can't live without them to tell them how to think.

"Regressive" is surely appropriate if we can assume they started failing to progress socially around 2 years of age. They never learned to respect anyone outside what represents a family in adulthood.

For his ignorance and hatefulness.

I have noticed as I have grown older just how polite and considerate young, black teens are.
They open doors,respect others.

But my question about the man is where did he learn to be so crude and mean? His actions are far beyond the child wondering. He is the child.

As to his lie about being a Fireman, those who try to save lives at the expense of their own have huge compassion, something this man lacked.

Shouting slurs, calling him a mooslim and then killed him.

OLATHE, Kan. – A man has been charged with murder in what some witnesses described as a racially motivated shooting at a crowded suburban Kansas City bar that left one Indian man dead and two other men hospitalized.

Local police are working with the FBI to investigate the shooting Wednesday night in Olathe, Kansas, but have declined to describe the attack as a hate crime.

A bartender at Austins Bar and Grill said Adam Purinton used "racial slurs" before he opened fire as patrons watched the University of Kansas-TCU basketball game on television. Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, died at a hospital, while 32-year-old Alok Madasani and 24-year-old Ian Grillot are hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

that it makes me want to cry. The self proclaimed "fireman" needs to cry. He has a lot of sorrow inside that has turned to anger over the years. At some point in his life, he was a tiny child in public crying because he was unhappy/in pain/hungry and someone smacked him good and told him "Stop it! Boys don't cry!"

When shit like this happens, the perp should be sentenced to 1000 hours of deep introspective navel gazing with some new age hippie types who will pry that childhood trauma out of him. Plus, when the judge reads it in court, he will hate the sentence much more than going to jail (which is "manly" ).
