The State Department on Tuesday announced new sanctions against North Korea after it determined Kim Jong Uns regime used a chemical weapon to assassinate the leaders half-brother.
The State Department said the North Korean government used the chemical VX, which is banned under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warefare Elimination Act of 1991, to kill Kim Jong Nam.
This public display of contempt for universal norms against chemical weapons use further demonstrates the reckless nature of North Korea and underscores that we cannot afford to tolerate a North Korean WMD program of any kind, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.
Kim Jong Nam died last year after two women smeared the substance in his face at an airport in Kuala Lumpur. A chemist later determined that traces of VX nerve agent were found on the two women accused of killing Kim Jong Nam.

(51 posts)What a joke this administration is. Just when North and South Korea agree to resume peace talks, they decide to sanction NK again to further provoke them. I'm not saying it was ok for Kim Jung Un to kill his brother, but why sanction them over something that did not involve us and will most likely provoke a response that will threaten America? Meanwhile Putin shows a video of Russia nuking the US and absolute silence from trump.

(14,173 posts)I think Trump was privately seething at South Korea's President Moon Jae-in with his overtures to his northern brother country for the Olympics. Inviting them to take part with them in some events etc.. And then to sustain these olive branch efforts post-Olympics. It is screwing with Trump's plan to keep his boogey man, so he has a war in his back pocket ready to go if Mueller gets too close.
It makes no sense at all, a year after, to raise this internally motivated NK political crime, the results of which affect nothing in the US, other than to poke the bear and derail any good will SK may be building with them.

(7,358 posts)It would seem this administration does not want peace on the Korean peninsula. Just when N.Korea and S.Korea were beginning talks.
