UPDATED: Florida governor signs bill imposing limits on guns in what could become blueprint...

Source: The Washington Post

By Washington Post Staff March 9 at 3:12 PM

Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican who has an A-plus rating from the National Rifle Association, defied the powerful group by signing the bipartisan legislation. The bill would impose a three-day waiting period for most purchases of long guns and raise the minimum age for purchasing those weapons to 21. It also would create a program to train and arm school employees.

The legislation is a response to the Feb. 14 slayings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 dead. It signaled a major shift for a state known as a legal laboratory for gun rights activists.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

UPDATE:

Florida Gov. Rick Scott breaks with NRA to sign new gun regulation

By Michael Scherer March 9 at 3:19 PM

Florida Gov. Rick Scott defied his longtime allies at the National Rifle Association Friday to sign into law a new set of gun regulations, three weeks after a school shooting claimed 17 lives in his state.

Scott said he was signing the legislation because this is a time for all of us to come together, roll up our sleeves and get it done.

The law, passed by Republican legislative leaders and a number of Democrats, marks a major shift for a state known as a laboratory for gun rights legislation, including legal protections for people who use guns in self-defense and an expansive concealed carry law.

It comes as federal efforts to address the Feb. 14 slayings at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have sputtered, despite calls from President Trump for bipartisan action. The U.S. Senate has no bill scheduled for debate, and the only measure moving in the House of Representatives is a bill to increase shooting response training for students and teachers.

The Florida law imposes a three-day waiting period for most purchases of long guns, raises the minimum age for purchasing those weapons to 21, and ban the possession of bump stocks, devices that can make semi-automatic weapons fire like fully-automatic firearms.

NRA worm is turning over in its vile den.

No more A+ for Scott and he should be proud of the downgrade as anyone should be.

The "arming the teachers" part will never be implemented because teachers will never go for it, so it is all good.

The NRA never was and never will be invincible. All it took was a general sense of human decency and logic.

Gunner, beware, we are coming for our regulations on your guns.

23. FL Law 'GUARDIAN' Program Enables Teachers, Other School Employees to Carry Handguns
Fri Mar 9, 2018, 08:20 PM
Mar 2018

"The bill signed Friday raises the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21, extends a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases to include long guns and bans bump stocks that allow guns to mimic fully automatic fire.
It also creates a so-called "guardian" program that enables teachers and other school employees to carry handguns."

Yes, this new legislation includes arming teachers and other school employees, aka 'guardians'. What exactly the new program involves we'll see. It's opening a dangerous door and I'm suspicious, for good reason!

In the article, longtime FL gun rights activist, MARION THE HAMMER is livid!

I've mentioned my interest in public education before, at least 6 relatives went into teaching over three generations including a teacher sister, and my work as a public museum educator. I'm also fairly familiar with Broward Co., FL (Boca Raton, Parkland) through a relative and kids who lived there. It's a more educated, upscale area and I'm so glad these smart, activist kids who survived the shooting are pushing really hard against this Scourge in our nation!
