Trump nudges GOP challenger out of Nevada Senate race, aiding incumbent Dean Heller

President Trump appeared to end a nasty intraparty duel Friday by suggesting that a Republican running a populist, unabashedly pro-Trump campaign abandon his effort to unseat Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) this year.

“It would be great for the Republican Party of Nevada, and it’s unity if good guy Danny Tarkanian would run for Congress and Dean Heller, who is doing a really good job, could run for Senate unopposed!” Trump tweeted Friday afternoon.

Moments later, Tarkanian’s wife tweeted that he would obey the president’s wishes: “He would’ve made an excellent Senator, but will also make a tremendous member of Congress…looking fwd to continuing the fight in helping implement America first policies!” Amy Tarkanian said from her verified account.

Tarkanian, the son of legendary college basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, announced a primary challenge to Heller last August, after Heller flipped and flopped on whether to support the Republican health-care overhaul backed by Trump. “We’re never going to make America great again unless we have senators in office supporting President Trump,” Tarkanian said on Fox News Channel in announcing his run.

Trump calls for Tarkanian to drop Heller Senate challenge

President Trump undercut the Republican challenger running against Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) on Friday by calling on him to abandon his Senate bid and run for House instead.

Danny Tarkanian, a perennial candidate who is the grandson of Nevada basketball legend Jerry Tarkanian, has sought to challenge Heller from the right. While he has tried to tie himself to Trump by pitching himself as a truer friend to the president than Heller, Trump's Friday afternoon tweet dealt a blow to that message.

In the tweet, Trump praised Heller and called on Tarkanian to step aside.

Heller is seen as one of the most vulnerable incumbent senators of the 2018 cycle. The winner of the GOP primary will likely face off against Rep. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), who leads the Democratic primary.
