what is their real agenda? why be anti-abortion to maximize the number of kids if they're just cannon-fodder in their high schools?

(45,426 posts)we had shootings when I was in school but not nearly this often. This is insane and only getting worse over time, not better.
Maybe Maryland will have more representation in the marches this week as more people are inspired to take action. And the liberal Dems in this blue state might be pressured to pass some sensible reforms.

(1,399 posts)I have been a dem all my life, I live in BFE America and am a gun owner and never had I ever seen so much gun violence. When I was in school during the 70's the guys would drive their trucks to school, with their guns hanging in their gun racks, and never was there anything like this, I think the worse thing that happened was on senior day a guy dropped an m80 down the toilet and blew the pipes. I have never seen such a disrespect of life, what the hell are these people thinking? No one but no one has the right to take another person's life (unless you or your family is in a life threatening situation then I'm gonna shoot ur ass) but to go to a school and start shooting kids what the hell, and I don't want to hear I was bullied so I killed them, that's a cop out. Something is happening to our society that people feel the need to kill others whether at school, a show or where ever, and its got to stop. Have we become that desensitized that we have no value on human life?

(47,397 posts)have always existed, but there wasn't access to weapons that could cause so much death so quickly. People with problems reacted in different ways, often self-destructive, but if they lashed out at another person(s), they didn't have high capacity magazines. Also many of them are undoubtedly copying the behavior of others they see on the news. Today's young people live in a gun culture, unlike previous generations. This is all new and inconceivable to my generation, it has become common to theirs.
There is no one easy answer, but clearly easy access to weapons of war certainly is a major contributor and is a good place to start. Then we can work on addressing bullying and psychological counseling.

(1,399 posts)is great as long as the information is there, and yes bullying has been around forever. But as far as these kids being the only gun culture I grew up where everyone had guns, they still do. My grandfather always taught me you point a gun you better plan on using it and you better have a G_Damn good reason for using it, and I knew he meant business. I guess it was a different world you knew if you screwed up you were going to be held responsible for your actions, todays kid they don't think they have too. They think its ok to bully and no one is going to do crap about it. Then someone kills and poof their life is done, there is no going back, no I'm sorrys will take away the pain of what they have done. I don't know what the answer is but I guess we need to start before it gets to the "I have to take my kid to counseling because of being bullied" part is we teach them how to deal with bullies, and that anger isn't the answer. Maybe teaching our kids some self worth will work.

(47,397 posts)People weren't stockpiling AR-15s and high capacity magazines, unless they were part of a criminal enterprise or planning a revolution. Guns were for hunting, protection, and target practice. I agree that for the most part, people treated guns with more respect and caution then today. For a small minority, today it has become almost a cult.
Also the NRA used to be a reputable organization that promoted safety and responsible gun ownership. They weren't owned by gun manufacturers.
There are so many things that brought us to where we are today and if we put them all together, we end up with a perfect storm. It isn't an easy problem, but we have to start somewhere. Doing nothing is not an option, which I think congress is finally figuring out.
CelticWinter
(1,399 posts)like it use to be from what hubby says he quit them more than 20 yrs ago, too much big business!!! And I agree that something has to be done about this, we can outlaw them but then like prohibition they will go to the black market. Congress needs to start brain storming ideas, and if they cant come up with something they need to come to the people, talk to them, both left and right sides this is something we cant be divided on, we need to come up with a solution. We have to do this for our future generations or they will look at us with great disappointment as the biggest failures to walk the earth.
Celtic
There is no perfect answer, but doing nothing is not acceptable, as the problem is getting worse each day. We have the resources to bring about positive change, but apparently not the will. We won't eliminate all gun violence, just as we haven't reduced all car accidents through legislation and education.
I look back at my childhood and that of my children, and school was considered a "safe place". When my kids left for school, I might have worried about them not being prepared for a test or crossing a busy street, but I couldn't have imagined being afraid that they would be shot in their classrooms. We cannot allow this to become the norm. This is not the world I want for my grandchildren.

(7,527 posts)has made the concept viable to any youth who is full of hate and has access to guns.
So the problem becomes "You might be a responsible gun owner, but are you sure your kid won't decide that he wants to shoot his classmates and do something rash as a non-responsible not-gun owner who lives in your house?"

(130,864 posts)the publicity around them has made the concept viable to any youth who is full of hate, of whom there are a lot, and getting worse. Recall teen years?
The hate, anger, and frustration have always been there, but easy access to weapons of war was not. Meanwhile, young disturbed people see this sort of thing on television on a regular basis.

We have snow everywhere right now and chance of snow showers tomorrow. The last couple of years, February was more like spring than March. If this snow doesn't go away, an Easter egg hunt will be very interesting.
