Peru's President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski resigns

Source: Wall Street Journal

Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, a market-friendly leader and one of Washington’s allies in Latin America, resigned Wednesday after a secretly recorded video appeared to show his allies trying to buy off an opposition lawmaker to sway a coming impeachment vote, two officials said.

Kuczynski, 79, is stepping down just 19 months after taking office in the wake of allegations of wrongdoing over his past business ties with Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht. He was expected to be impeached and thrown out of office on Thursday by lawmakers.

The scandal leading up to his resignation has rocked Peru, which for years has been one of Latin America’s fastest-growing economies and a darling of Wall Street.

Vice President Martín Vizcarra, currently serving also as Peru’s ambassador to Canada, is expected to take over the government.

I suppose that the fact that Kuczynski's party holds a small minority of seats - more so even than the hard evidence against him - may have been an indispensable factor in his eventual impeachment.

Our dear old GOP, as you know, could be shown footage of Cheeto cavorting with five Russian 13 year-olds on a bed full of rubles with Putin pissing on them all, and they wouldn't allow so much as a peep of impeachment. They have a majority (for now), and can get thus away with it.

On a lighter note, All the Best to your sister. I once almost visited Peru, but got cold feet (dummy that I am). Northwestern Argentina is the closest I got; it's a little like Peru but less indigenous and thereby less interesting.

She is at M Picchu today and the skies are clear. So far she hasn't eaten any guinea pigs or ceviche with ketchup. She wanted to go there to see the weaving and textiles. She is happy to get away from the horrid daily news of our govt. Peru's govt problems seems like a picnic compared to what we have in the present and near future in the US.

He was very depressed about his country's politics.

He was saying they need a dictator, not for ever, just for a few years to try to get rid of all the corruption. He feels every major politician is completely corrupted. He blames Brazil for his country's corruption for some reason.

to be sterilized, while not informing them what was happening, thereby wiping out any potential generation of indigenous Peruvian children for those many, many women, thereby committing a back-door genocide, has her political bloque in the legislature and their confederates who worked wildly to get Kuczynski impeached. As already mentioned, Kuczynski made it much easier for them, too.

They won't be giving up, now that he's gone. They'll be working on Viscarra. Hope his record is much cleaner, and things go well for him, so they can't gain momentum on the new guy. They thoroughly intend to get Keiko Fujimori's backside siting on the same chair her father, the totally corrupt, totally vicious, totally racist Alberto Fujimori warmed, before her.

Thanks, sandensea.

Now Kuczynski can get back to his real passion, music.
