Tillerson bids farewell to 'mean-spirited' Washington

Fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson gives brief farewell address to State Department employees.

WASHINGTON — Fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is lamenting the 'mean-spirited' nature of Washington, D.C., as he bids goodbye to the U.S. diplomatic corps.

In a brief final farewell address to State Department employees on Thursday, Tillerson urged them to protect their personal integrity and to strive to respect one another. "This can be a very mean-spirited town," he said to laughter from a crowd of several hundred people gathered in the main lobby of the building. "But you don't have to choose to participate in that," he said to applause.

Tillerson had been the subject of months of negative reports and speculation before President Donald Trump abruptly fired him last week.

Tillerson also said it is more important than ever for the State Department to do its job.

All these department heads were put in place to dismantle the very department they were/are leading. This is pretty rich.

I am sure pompous Pompeo will be bad in his own way, but I shed no tears for Rex. He is the worst Secretary of State in the modern era.

Workers all across the world are treated this way daily. Only they don't get to go home to multiple millions of dollars in the bank. Instead, Republicans grouse & complain that workers get workers compensation, or disability, or need Social Security to assist them in their senior years.

Welcome to our world, Rex. You had forgotten that the world could be mean spirited, even with an earnest worker who tried his best to do his job under difficult circumstances.

Ye should have left months ago. After the first time your boss humiliated you or undermined you in public.

Sing your swan song to Trump, Rex! Sing it loud!

And of ALL the Departments, his probably lost the most senior employees of any other department in the federal government. The corps has been completely decimated.

The irony is rich here.

One thing I am going to "guess" about Rex Tillerson. At some point he either failed to get sanctions lifted or decided not to rigorously pursue that course. I think it was why Trump hired him to begin with and fired him in the end. What led to his firing and was it related to failure to lift sanctions and consequently screw up a 1/2 Trillion dollar deal? He certainly wasn't fired because he destroyed the state department.....Trump didn't care about that.

He was unqualified and unequipped for the job. He should have never accepted the position in the first place and when he realized the president was a "moron", he should have resigned.

Both had been used to never being told NO, by anyone. Problem was Tillerson finally had a boss that could tell him NO.

…liked him. The fact that he signed on to begin with, shows that Tillerson is a snake made of oil.

didn't want anyone, including his staff, to speak to him unless he called upon them to, and no one was supposed to look him in the eye. I read this somewhere a long time ago but don't know if it's true.
