House probe of Rep. Duncan Hunter deferred amid criminal investigation into alleged campaign fund misuse
By Elise Viebeck March 23 at 5:59 PM
The House Ethics Committee announced Friday that it will continue to defer its probe into Rep. Duncan D. Hunters (R-Calif.) alleged misuse of campaign funds amid an ongoing criminal investigation into the same matter.
In a statement released Friday, the panel noted that the Justice Department asked it to defer consideration of Hunters case one year ago. Further deferrals do not necessarily indicate that any violation has occurred, the statement read.
Hunter has denied knowingly using any campaign funds for personal expenses. His lawyers have said he is fully cooperating with the criminal probe, and he reportedly repaid his campaign fund $60,000.
Investigators are looking into whether Hunter spent campaign funds improperly to benefit friends and family, including funding vacations and private school tuition for his children. His spending has been under scrutiny since 2016.

The House Ethics Committee on Thursday deferred its probe into the alleged misuse of campaign funds by Rep. Duncan Hunter at the request of the Justice Department.
The Justice Department makes such requests when it is conducting its own investigation.
The California Republican may have used tens of thousands of dollars from his congressional campaign committee for his personal use, according to an August 2016 report from the Office of Congressional Ethics. The expenses may have included paying for family travel, flights, utilities, health care, school uniforms and tuition, jewelry and groceries.
Per OCE, if Hunter did use funds from his committee, he may have violated House, rules, standards of conduct and federal law.
