Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is set to announce a federal jobs proposal that would guarantee a job with at least a $15-per-hour wage and health benefits to every adult American who wants or needs one, The Washington Post reports.
The senator is still in the early stages of crafting the plan, according to the Post, which would provide a job or required training for any American.
Sanders's office has yet to release the details of the plan's funding, but previous large-scale projects proposed by the Vermont progressive have involved ending tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and large corporations.
The Vermont senator joins two other possible 2020 contenders, Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), who have also expressed support for similar proposals in recent weeks.

(6,551 posts)Surprised that Gillibrand and Booker are going down a similar path. We need progress in health care, jobs and education but promising the moon is completely unrealistic and will not win the presidency.

(14,164 posts)The general strategy is something long overdue with Democrats.
They should learn, what they can, from Trump and the GOP's success. And no, it wasn't all because of Russia, gerrymandering, and crosscheck. At least some of their votes were because people heard what they had wanted to hear. The Wall, is the best example. OF COURSE it is impossible. Both logistically and financially, to build and actual giant wall across the whole US southern border. But that's not why Trump put it in his platform. It was to appeal to all those that were pre-primed to want it, and to imagine it happening was a real possibility.
I haven't read up too much on this particular proposal, but if we look at single payer type of universal medical care for instance, the difference is that it IS possible. All you have to do is look at every other western democracy to see it works and is much cheaper. But Democrats have been so damn shy of even raising the possibility of great progressive goals that their base can rally around, if it even has a hint of being unsubstantiated. Remembering Hillary's response to single payer "It isn't going to happen". Now she and her DLC team may have concluded that position based on the present state of the union, and had all kinds of figures to back that up, but its not a way to win elections. You have to have dreams and promises and even unicorns to inspire voters. Especially the younger voter.
Because once you have won...you can at least move towards that direction, if not actually implementing it completely. At the very least, by winning, you prevent the GOP from destroying the country.

But it is, so we needn't.

(37,748 posts)Let's not confuse under-employment equilibrium with full employment. They appear similar on only a facile examination, yet are two wholly separate concepts.

(7,143 posts)If you think we're suffering from underemployment, how will adding to the workforce - especially state jobs - improve GDP?
Real GDP, BTW, will increase as the Fed raises rates. That's a far better, and more tenable, solution than Sanders' ignorant con. The last thing we need, in the midst of a recovery, is out-of-control inflation.
