Trump: If Dems win in 2018 midterms, they'll impeach me

Source: The Hill

By Morgan Gstalter - 04/28/18 09:07 PM EDT

President Trump said Saturday that Republicans need to maintain the House majority, otherwise he could face impeachment from Democrats.

“We have to keep the House because if we listen to Maxine Waters, she’s going around saying ‘We will impeach him,’” Trump said at a Michigan rally on Saturday.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) often calls for Trump to resign or face impeachment.

Last week at the Time 100 gala in New York, Waters urged Trump to “please resign.”

“So that I won’t have to keep up this fight of your having to be impeached because I don’t think you deserve to be there,” Waters said. “Just get out.”

but the 2/3 vote of the Senate to convict seems impossible. I don't see him resigning either. The only way he'll go is if he loses in 2020.

A member of Congress, of any party, has five loyalties. They come in this order:

Loyalty to their seat
Loyalty to their donors
Loyalty to their party
Loyalty to their constituents
Loyalty to the country

There are a few exceptions - Senator Tester from Montana shooting down the Candy Man's VA secretary nomination being the most recent example of putting his constituents (there are many veterans in Montana) and nation ahead of his seat - but in general, that's how they roll.

If Robert Mueller presents a solid case for impeaching Donald Trump, the House votes to kick him to the curb and the Senate votes to keep him, there are a LOT of GOP Senate and House seats that just became vulnerable in 2020.

I think it's more likely, though, that the GOP leadership will tell Trump, "resign or we'll impeach you, and the civil and criminal trials that will follow an impeachment will put you in prison for the rest of your life and strip you of all your wealth." Trump being the kind of guy who likes to see his name up in lights, he will haul ass, Pence will pardon him, and the government will go into caretaker mode until the 2020 election can be held.

Also any legal threats to him would be moot if he pardons himself first...

The Democratic leadership needs to be clear that impeachment is not their goal post 2018 mid-terms. They need to remove this talking point from him or he will continue to use it to rally his base. We don't need them to feel motivated enough to get out and vote.

Now, notice I did not say he should never be impeached. When Mueller delivers his reports/determination/indictments I suspect there will be little choice.

The important thing here is this should not be a campaign trail item and promise from Democrats. It will cause us to be in the weeds far too much.

She knows that it will do us more harm than good. We need to have a general Dem agreement that they stick with two issues during campaigning...affordable health care and the tax scam (voters in both parties agree with these issues). Stay away from abortion, the 2nd Amend., and immigration. If the Dems can stick to the local issues like they did during the special elections we have a chance at flipping the House.

A Democratic House could pass articles of impeachment.

BUT there is no apparent way that two-thirds of the Senate would pass those articles. There are 42 Republican Senate seats that are not up for election in 2018.

We need to concentrate on keeping the 26 Democratic seats that are up for election in 2018.

Right now, Road to 270 is predicting 41 Democrats, 48 Republicans, and 11 undecided seats. The Democrats need all of the projected wins plus 10 of the projected undecided races to take over the Senate.

We need to act to ensure there is a blue wave in November.

And even if he is, the republicans will not allow him to be removed from office. They are ALL too cowardly for that to happen.
What would be preferable would be to see Federal officers march into the Oval Office and handcuff the asshole and march him to a waiting paddy wagon. I know, I know, that won't happen either, but I can wish.

By saying what he said Trump is trying to scare all his supporters into action because it'll get them to fear the possibility of losing him as President, losing their power in the world. They would rather have the most vilest scum on the earth as president then a Democrat. Don't dismiss these rallies Trump does either. With them he is trying to build up that momentum again that destroyed Hillary and got him the Presidency. We really need to take this calculating psychopath seriously and not just brush him off if we want to actually win this time. If we want him out and win the big boy seats in Washington we need to focus on issues that matter to the common people like jobs, healthcare, economy and educational issues. Impeachment and gun control. People these days hate beating a dead horse so we need to chose wisely when to talk about those things. Also this might not be popular, but we need to keep our cool and not let Repugs get to us. We need to continue to prove to everyone especially independent voters that the Democratic party is the rational party and not the emotional irrational party that the Repugs paint us as.

The Democratic Party must counter that they will provide the needed "checks and balances" to the current one party rule. Only with a Democratic House can proposed decreases in social safety nets (to pay for the GOP tax cuts which increased the federal deficit), decreases in public safety and education, and privatization (selling to the wealthiest) of our country's lands and resources be STOPPED. The Republicans will still have the Presidency and control (Presidential veto power), but will no longer have control of the three branches of federal government.

I see it breaking another way and him wishing that he would have resigned when he had the chance. When a fool challenges and fights something they shouldn't, then one will only need to go back to the history books to see what happens. Donald might not have seen his grand plan of 'make America great again' but he will wish it wasn't so great when the pursued becomes the pursuer

They have all been incompetent doofuses for the last 1-1/2 years. They've accomplished nothing except to create the largest national debt in the history of the planet. If they had their way, they would undo all the Constitutional freedoms that Americans have enjoyed for the last 220 years.

Whether the next step is impeachment - or not - it needs to be decided by much smarter and more qualified legislators. Time to clean house and get rid of these clowns.
