House Republicans are preparing to endorse President Donald Trump’s plan for a military parade in the nation’s capital, with warfighting vehicles rolling down city streets and planes flying overhead.

The display in Washington would be authorized under the Republican-proposed draft for the annual defense policy measure, according to a bill summary released Friday. The measure is scheduled to be taken up by the House Armed Services Committee on May 9.

The parade would look back “on a century of military service and focuses on the men and women who sacrificed to secure America’s freedoms,” according to the summary released by committee chairman Mac Thornberry, a Texas Republican. “Far too many American veterans and their families believe their sacrifices have not been given the public recognition that they deserve.”

Trump said in February that he wanted a parade if it could be done at a “reasonable” cost.
A committee Republican spokesman said Friday that specific funding for the parade isn’t set in the legislation.

7. Trump's fascination with all things military makes me nervous.

He's stuffed his administration with military men, and he's budgeted an obscene increase in funding to the Pentagon. He's tried to kick out certain categories of people who don't fit his fantasy image of warriors. He stages frequent photo ops surrounded by military props. He praises war and violence, and send the National Guard to the border in a military action against unarmed civilians.

It scares me to think that when Trump is finally cornered and facing indictments or impeachment, that he will turn into a full blown dictator and call upon his bootlicking generals to marshall their troops and order the military come save him. It would be a military coup and then what happens... I don't know, but the possibility is alarming.

I like to think such a thing could never happen. I think most of the folks in the military wouldn't obey orders like that, since most of them are fundamentally decent human beings. They're also taught to disobey unlawful orders.

Will they resist the siren call of advertiser profits, or will they fall in line with Trump's "It's all about me" military spectacular, with dozens of shots of his smug face as he gazes over "his" troops.

I vote the latter -- they'll cave. Wall-to-wall coverage will give the event legitimacy. Trump is the master con man.

And he will probably find some way to personally profit from the event. All those generals and admirals are going to have to stay somewhere, and what better location than the Trump Hotel?

Wait until the 2019 parade. It will be twice as big as this year's!
