Magnitude 6.9 Quake Reported in Hawaii's Big Island

Source: KTLA

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Hawaii Island on Friday, with its epicenter at the heart of the newly erupting Kilauea volcano.

The earthquake could be felt across the state, including Oahu, the home of the state capital of Honolulu.

The earthquake occurred around 12:32 p.m., about an hour after a magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit the same area. Officials did not expect a damaging tsunami.

“It caused a lot of shaking in Hilo. There’s been some minor sea level fluctuations and we do not expect a damaging tsunami,” said Cindi Preller, a geologist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor.

Fema comes in after the fact. There has been very little time for them to mobilize.

They are not helpless. I'm talking about evacs and immediate response. Should anything happen it's going to take time to get assets there.

It is hard to get to islands. Just look at Puerto Rico. 45 told us how hard it is to get to islands. So you are correct. Just ask 45. They still haven't given much help to Puerto Rico, it being an island and all.

Compared to other quakes where hundreds of thousands lost power, this does not seem that bad..More news will come to clarify this..I hope for the best..

He went to visit a guy who ran a B and B in the middle of lava flows. He built a place there and never wanted to leave. Eventually he was forced out since the flows got too close to his home. Skip to 28:10 on the video.
