Oliver North to be NRA's new president

Oliver North, the Fox News contributor and central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal, will be the National Rifle Association's new president, the group announced Monday.

"Oliver North is, hands down, the absolute best choice to lead our NRA Board, to fully engage with our members, and to unflinchingly stand and fight for the great freedoms he has defended his entire life," NRA executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre said in a statement on the pick.

In his statement, LaPierre compared North favorably to Charlton Heston, the Hollywood icon who was once president of the group.

23. No. It was overturned by Laurence Silberman's. Jeffrey Toobin wrote a great book on it

"Opening Arguments" Toobin was hired just after passing the bar to be on Walsh's Special Prosecutor team. The lengths they had to go to to avoid hearing what North testified about were incredible but Silberman's overturned the conviction saying that Walsh's didn't avoid it enough. Complete bullshit.

24. I remember Sen Daniel Inouye lecturing Oliver North about the loyalty of soldiers

In the Iran Contra Hearings, North had snidely replied to a question about telling lies, "That's what a good soldier does"

Senator Inouye stiffened and calmly recited the part of the Army's military code of conduct dealing lies and duty.

Inouye had only one arm. He left the other one back on a battlefield in Italy when a German hand grenade went off.

He was part of the Army outfit -- the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, made up almost entirely of Japanese-Americans.

Some of them had spent time in barbed wire internment camps until the government decided they could be trusted to spill their blood for their own country. So they said goodbye to their families -- still behind barbed wire -- and went off to fight.

They were know as the “Go for Broke” outfit and were the most decorated unit in the war.

Olie North was a bit more subdued after a finger wagging from a real American hero.

CHANTILLY, VA. — A judge has disarmed Oliver North. Judge James L. Berry refused to renew North's gun permit because the former Marine is ''not of good character.'' North, the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, was convicted in 1991 for his role in the Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages deal. The verdict was overturned on appeal, but Berry said he could not ignore North's conviction ''for crimes involving moral turpitude.'' North, who received notice of Berry's decision in the mail Friday, had been allowed to carry up to three concealed handguns, but his permit expired in March. His campaign staff called the decision politically motivated. Berry, a Democrat, granted North his permit in 1992.
