Richard Cordray Defeats Dennis Kucinich in Ohio Democratic Primary

Source: NY Times

WASHINGTON — In a hard-fought battle between two liberal Democrats, Richard Cordray, the former head of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, won the party’s nomination in the Ohio governor’s race on Tuesday night over the former congressman and presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich, according to the Associated Press.

The victory by Mr. Cordray, who was endorsed by Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and drew strong labor support, came as a relief to many Democrats who saw Mr. Kucinich as unelectable, given his sharply left-wing views and ties to a group sympathetic to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Mr. Cordray will compete this fall against Mike DeWine, the state attorney general, who claimed the Republican nomination after an aggressive challenge from Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor.

Coming in at 4.6% and having virtually no media presence, I think he set the stage with his unique social media post about his history with women and he never shook that off.

I like the consolidation behind a single candidate. We struggled with that in 2014 when Fitzgerald had lukewarm support against Kasich and then proceeded to implode his campaign with revelations about a 4:30am tryst in a parking lot with a "woman, not his wife". Interestingly, the real nail in the coffin was that the guy didn't have a driver's license - and hadn't had one for about 10 years in spite of driving regularly - including for his position as a county exec in Cleveland.

So...we can pick 'em in ohio, that's for sure.

But I think Cordray is our best change at the statehouse in a long time.

It was a blowout, but don't worry about Dennis The Menace--he can find plenty of work with buddies, Putin and al-Assad!
