New NRA president says gun control activists are 'civil terrorists'

Source: The Guardian

Activists pushing for stronger gun laws are engaged in “civil terrorism”, Oliver North, the Fox News commentator appointed as the next president of the National Rifle Association, has claimed.

The former Reagan-era security adviser, who was once convicted on charges related to the Iran-Contra affair, also claimed the NRA was the target of a “cyberwar”.

“They’re not activists – this is civil terrorism. This is the kind of thing that’s never been seen against a civil rights organization in America,” Oliver North told the Washington Examiner, a conservative newspaper. “You go back to the terrible days of Jim Crow and those kinds of things – even there you didn’t have this kind of thing.”

During the era of Jim Crow segregation, American civil rights activists were beaten and murdered. In 1963, four black children were killed when white supremacists bombed a black church in Birmingham, Alabama.

In July 1987, North was summoned to testify before televised hearings of a joint congressional committee that was formed to investigate the Iran–Contra scandal. During the hearings, North admitted that he had lied to Congress previously, for which, with other actions, he was later charged. He defended his actions by stating that he believed in the goal of aiding the Contras, whom he saw as freedom fighters against the Sandinistas and said that he viewed the Iran–Contra scheme as a "neat idea."[26] North admitted shredding government documents related to these activities, at William Casey's suggestion, when the Iran–Contra scandal became public. He also testified that Robert McFarlane had asked him to alter official records to delete references to direct assistance to the Contras and that he had helped.[27]

North was tried in 1988. He was indicted on 16 felony counts, and on May 4, 1989, he was initially convicted of three: accepting an illegal gratuity, aiding and abetting in the obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and ordering the destruction of documents through his secretary, Fawn Hall. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gerhard Gesell on July 5, 1989 to a three-year suspended prison term, two years probation, $150,000 in fines, and 1,200 hours of community service. North performed some of his community service within Potomac Gardens, a public housing project in southeast Washington, DC.[28] However, on July 20, 1990, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU),[29] North's convictions were vacated, after the appeals court found that witnesses in his trial might have been impermissibly affected by his immunized congressional testimony.[30]

And trying to fucking invoke Jim Crow to essentially compare the NRA to an organization like the NAACP, despite the fact that his gun and bomb toting KKK-loving brothers blew up 4 black children, is so far over the top that it has done stunk up high heaven and is now stinking up the hell that he came out of.

I'll even add some of these on your behalf* -->

A former republican gunrunner who sold arms to our "enemy" Iran is calling American children who don't wish to see their classmates gunned down in school terrorists. Trumps America.

You've finally descended to a position that really fits you: president of a far-right, lily-white, violence-addicted trash group, the NRA. You're no Chuck Heston---as you're already demonstrating. Give Ted Nugent a kiss for us.

I was afraid he was going to say something rational, but, no, right off the bat he drives the bus into Crazyland.

I'm old enough to remember when the NRA was purely a gun safety organization.

So, I guess he is calling the founding fathers civil terrorists. It was the founding fathers who agreed to an amendment that in part stated "a well regulated militia". It seems that if you go by the actual wording of the 2nd amendment the government has every right to put into place gun control.
