Cohen's $600,000 deal with AT&T specified he would advise on Time Warner merger

Source: Washington Post

Three days after President Trump was sworn into office, the telecom giant AT&T turned to his personal attorney Michael Cohen for help on a wide portfolio of issues pending before the federal government — including the company’s proposed merger with Time Warner, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post.

The internal documents reveal for the first time that Cohen’s $600,000 deal with AT&T specified that he would provide advice on the $85 billion merger, which required the approval of federal antitrust regulators.

Trump had voiced opposition to the merger during the campaign and his administration ultimately sided against AT&T. The Department of Justice filed suit in November to block the deal, a case that is still pending.

Cohen’s deals with AT&T and other corporate clients were first revealed this week by an attorney for adult-film star Stormy Daniels, but the new documents obtained by The Post offered greater detail about his arrangement with telecom company and the type of work he had been hired to perform.

and has been the way they have ALWAYS operated for many decades. It has now spilled over into trying to do the same thing while in the federal government and we're at the point where they are saying "tough shit" and daring anyone to do something about it.

Then again, he's exactly the type Big Business always wanted as president: an ignorant, easily-bribed puppet that constantly distracts the crowds with shiny objects and buffoonery.

God help us all.

A couple of grifters (Cohen and the Dotard) playing organizations (ATT and Anti-Trust DOJ) off of each other, never intending to deliver anything.

Just get more money.

They could keep this up for 4, maybe 8 years! "Making money is fun."

Isn't this all good ol' New York City street con, Three-card Monte?

These guys aren't "giants among men."

They just accumulated a lot more chips and a lot less ethics and morals than the rest of us.

At least when it came to audaciousness and grasp, he was in a league by himself. I don't think Cohen has expanded the Grifter Wiki all that much, nor adding to JA's legacy playbook.

Michael Cohen's legal woes keep getting worse and signs don't point to a Trump pardon

You don't need to be a lawyer to know that Cohen is in big trouble. Yet the most shocking aspects of this week's news may result in no criminal liability to Cohen. Given Trump's promise to "drain the swamp," news that his personal attorney took millions of dollars from companies to serve as a "lobbyist" for pharmaceutical giant Novartis, to provide "insights" to AT&T, and to provide "legal consulting regarding accounting standards" to Korea Aerospace Industries are problematic.

It is unusual, to say the least, that Cohen received millions from those companies after Trump's election. It is hard to believe that he was paid due to his skill as a lawyer, and it is odd that he used the shell company he set up to pay Daniels to receive the money. But it's unclear whether Cohen committed a crime by doing so. Cohen did fail to register as a lobbyist, but that is only a crime if he did so to purposely undermine the law, and there is an exception for individuals who spend less than 20% of their time lobbying.
