Philippine Supreme Court removes Duterte 'enemy' judge

MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippine Supreme Court voted on Friday to remove its top judge, whom President Rodrigo Duterte called an "enemy" for voting against controversial government proposals, citing violations in the way she was appointed.

One opposition party said the ouster of Maria Lourdes Sereno, the country's first woman chief justice, removed a shield against abuse of power in government and left behind a "puppet Supreme Court".

Senator Risa Hontiveros called it "a direct stab to the heart of our Constitution", while her Akbayan party said the country was "a heartbeat away" from the death of its democracy.

"After having a lapdog Congress and a seriously wounded Senate, we now have a puppet Supreme Court," the party said in a statement.

The difference, of course, is that while the Venezuelan far-left crisis is given ample coverage in the media, far-right kleptocrats like Macri and Brazil's Temer (plus Colombia's Uribe, a DEA-designated kingpin, if he's elected this year) are given mostly compliments and puff pieces.

Then, of course, when they have to run to the IMF for a massive emergency bailout (as Macri is doing as we speak), they're "surprised" and "disappointed" - as many in the media now are with Señor Trump.

I think many are saying "Hey, if even in the USA a tin pot dictator can rise to power and get away with such massive corruption, why not me?"

my DIL is from the Philippines - she calls Duterte a tyrant...she has only been here 4 years...she holds a masters in math and teaches 5th grade..they are both teachers...our discussions this week-end should be lively....
