'Melania' rockets up list of most popular baby names

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by muriel_volestrangler (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

“Melania” is one of the fastest-rising baby names in the country in terms of popularity.

The first lady’s given name came in fifth among the fastest-growing girls’ names from 2016 to 2017, according to a ranking released Friday by the Social Security Administration.

The name jumped a whopping 720 spots among the most popular girls’ names in the United States, from the 1,650 slot in 2016, to the 930th position last year.

“Melania” is of Spanish and Greek origin and means “black,” according to baby name site Nameberry.com.

The baby name news comes on the heels of a CNN/SSRS poll this week that showed Melania Trump's popularity with Americans was soaring. Fifty-seven percent of those surveyed said they had a favorable view of the 48-year-old first lady, compared to 47 percent in January.

in 5 years? The names in classes now are almost impossible to pronounce since all the parents think that they are being so unique and special by creating/inventing new names with ridiculous spelling. Sometimes there isn't even a vowel. It is like they got a bunch of Scrabble tiles, tossed them out and that is how they got their new baby's name, regardless of sex. When I was teaching I has to make separate name cards to help my substitutes that showed how to pronounce their names' phonetically. I taught for over 15 years and subbed for over two and never once had a Carol, Lisa, Susan or Karen...all popular names when I was growing up.

He wasn't totally in love with that, either. When he introduced himself, he added "Yeah. My parents were hippies." Not a drop of native blood, I was told.

Names can be kind of important, parents.

We've become a lot more diverse name-wise since the days of Jennifer and Heather (our daughter knew 4 sets of J and H sisters in elementary school). So presumably "Melania" has rocketed up toward or inside that top category.

When I was pregnant with our second child in LA, no internet and I wanted to avoid choosing a too-common name, so I had the bright idea of calling the birth registrar at LA County Medical Center to our current favorites by for comment. She was a delight and we had a great talk. The most popular names at LACMC right then? Kunta Kinte and Kizzy.
