Virginia police officer shoots naked man on interstate

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Police say a Virginia police officer shot a naked man on an interstate during rush hour.

Police say the shooting occurred on Interstate 95 Monday evening. The man has been hospitalized and The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that his condition was not immediately known.

Richmond police spokesman Gene Lepley says the incident began when an officer witnessed a hit-and-run at an intersection at 5:33 p.m. The newspaper says the shooting occurred moments later.

"A witness said she saw the man walk onto I-95 naked and begin dancing and slapping his hands on his head before dropping onto the ground and rolling around as though he thought he was on fire and was trying to put himself out.
“It was like he thought he was seriously on fire....”

I looked up what might cause a sensation of the skin burning and there are a number of things. It could be drugs, ingestion of or exposure to certain toxins, or it could be from a medical or psychiatric condition.

The fact that the taser had no effect on him sounds like PCP, Flakka, or "bath salts" is a possibility. I'm curious now as to what caused his bizarre behavior, but we may never know. I hope he makes it and gets the help he needs.

This guy was reportedly involved in hit and run, the as police chased him, he hit some other cars, hit some trees, then he got out of the car naked and run around on interstate, then approached police and tazer wasn't effective. Hit and run, hitting other cars, running on interstate all presumably totally safe activities that this guy should have allowed to continue until he was tired of it, according to arm chair detectives here.

"The driver of the vehicle that struck the other fled north on Belvidere, with the officer in pursuit, and took the on-ramp from Chamberlayne Avenue toward northbound I-95, Lepley said."

He was shot...obviously....AFTER he had gotten out of his car and unless he had an AR15 up his ass, he was UNARMED.

Cop shoots guy while he's behind the wheel of his car (potential deadly weapon) to stop him...that's fine.

You don't shoot someone because of what they did 10 minutes ago when they are no longer a threat.

"The man, whom witnesses saw dancing and then rolling around ON the interstate before the shooting, had crashed a sedan into trees off an interstate on-ramp moments earlier."

Bad day for this guy and in my opinion bad day for the cop. The guy had already struck two other vehicles with his own, was rolling around on the highway (thus potentially causing traffic fatalities) and a taze didn't stop him.

I'm really glad I'm not a cop. My family is as well.

I am often absolutely numb with fear at the prospect of doing something “wrong” and getting the attention of police, from just going a little over the speed limit to just some asshole that’s having a bad day and decides he is going to fuck with me that day, because i have no rights, I have no recourse, no appeal to the god-like powers of a cop to arrest you, beat you, sexually assault you or kill you.

I have this fear as a white male. I cannot imagine the situation of a person of color walking out of the house every day to face that same world. The bravery and fortitude is humbling.
