Poll: Trump reelection bid begins in a hole
Source: Politico
Just 36 percent of voters say they would vote for Trump over a generic Democratic candidate in 2020, compared with 44 percent who would pick the Democrat, the poll shows. One in five voters, 20 percent, are undecided.
Trump has trouble on the homefront, too. Despite the conventional wisdom that the president is wildly popular with the GOP base, the poll also shows a desire among a healthy slice of Republicans though a distinct minority for a challenger to run against Trump for the nomination.

It's like there are the 35-38% diehards and then everyone else.

(6,228 posts)A possible trump second term scares the crap out of me. We have lost so much already and 4 more years will hurt us all the more. That is why we on the left must unite and rally around our candidates. Stop attacking our side. Work like hell to get your candidates primary wins. But if your candidate loses the primary unite and work for the Dem that won. I have never had a problem supporting Dems, because I know that any repub is way worse.

(70,186 posts)While nearly four in 10 GOP voters say Donald Trump should face a primary challenge in 2020, no clear challenger has emerged, and Mike Pences appeal appears to be declining, said Kyle Dropp, Morning Consults co-founder and chief research officer. Today, 64 percent of Republicans say that they would prefer Trump as president, compared to 19 percent who pick Pence. That gap has grown since August 2017, when 58 percent picked Trump and 28 percent picked Pence."

(32 posts)We all know trump supporters will show up to the polls in the next election. Thier media is good at firing them up and getting them mad about things that dont matter. Wedge issues is still the red meat of the Republican Party at it works well for thier base.
Meanwhile, we keep talking about jobs, benefits, more pay and nobody seems to care. People are insane I tell you. People vote against their own paycheck because thier worries about immigrants and black lives matter. Red meat folks. Division is a powerful tool.
Im not saying democrats should stoop to the GOP level, but something has got to change. And I dont see any electable candidates coming down the pipeline either.

(7,430 posts)The national polls are all hacked to make it look like Trumpy has over 40% favorable ratings, as there are NO actual events or actions taken by Trumpy to cause a favorable increase in his approval ratings. Normally, there is a causal relationship between actions and poll numbers. Nothing of the sort now exists. People just dont change their minds about presidents just because its springtime. Something else is happening. All of this is not good.
