Pompeo: U.S. Will 'Walk Away' if N. Korea Doesn't Denuke
Source: The Daily Beast
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the House Foreign Affairs Committee Wednesday that the denuclearization of North Korea was the No. 1 priority, and that the U.S. would respectfully walk away from talks with the reclusive Kim Jong Un regime if that didnt happen. A bad deal is not an option, he told the committee in his prepared testimony. Pompeo also pressed for stabilization in Syria to ward off an ISIS resurgence, for filling vacant positions at the State Department, and for no tolerance of Russian interference in the 2018 midterm elections. On Tuesday, President Trump told reporters that there may be delays in the U.S.-North Korea talks, after a North Korean delegation reportedly failed to show up to a planning meeting and as North Korea canceled talks with South Korea over its joint military exercises with U.S. forces.

(10,749 posts)Well, the threat and the likely response - start walking - is where we are right now. And with the exception of moderate successes and lots of failures, that's where we've been with Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-il, and Kim Il-sung for about 65 years. That's the opposite of diplomacy. That's the opposite of success.
Diplomacy requires a delicate balance of compromise, face savings, success, failure, happiness, disappointment, and more. It's hard. It requires expertise and sensitivity, power and humility, carrots and sticks that everyone knows are carrots and sticks and that no one calls carrots and sticks.
This is not news to those of us in the reality-based universe.
Maybe the goal is to prove to Kim Jong-un that trump is in fact crazier than he (Kim) is, and the fear that accompany's that awareness is what will bring Kim to the table, regardless of how absurd the demands. That said, as mentioned, the Kim family has hung in there for 65 years, created and withstood famine and world condemnation. My guess is they believe they can hold out until trump is gone, and even if they agree to US demands now, you know full well everything is back on the table once more when trump is gone.
The possible irony is that in the wake of trump's missteps, it may turn out that there may be a slight detente between North Korea and South Korea and that this easing of tension will be done without the US and to the exclusion of US involvement or influence.
Not that any of this matters. In trump world, as long as he talks tough, his sycophants in Congress and his cult followers will label him tougher than any president ever in the known universe.
