GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah), the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, blasted the Trump administration's decision to slap steel and aluminum tariffs on the European Union, Canada and Mexico saying the financial penalties are a "tax hike on Americans."
"My position remains unchanged: Tariffs on steel and aluminum imports are a tax hike on Americans and will have damaging consequences for consumers, manufacturers and workers," Hatch said in a statement on Thursday.
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on Thursday said President Trump has decided to slap hefty tariffs on the the EU, Mexico and Canada, ending the temporary exemptions for the the key trading allies despite their two months of lobbying to avoid the tariffs.
Hatch added on Thursday that he would urge the administration to reverse its decision, but did not specify what steps he would take to try to pressure them to do so.

(6,227 posts)trump is hell bent on destroying us all in the name of nationalism. He lacks critical thinking skills to be president. It led to the Great Depression and will surely put us on that road now. If and when the Dems take charge our economy will be tanked as it was with W. My husband and I keep working and are afraid to even think about retirement.

(1,336 posts)who, because of his former position as Chair of the Bank of Cyprus, is probably in deep doodoo. Ross could also accurately be described as a doddering old fool, but that's beside the point. Trump threatened Canada and Mexico with these outrageous tariffs if neither country kowtowed to his NAFTA demands. Now he's following through on those threats, probably hoping to get his way after all. He has no f'ing idea of the damage to his own country this gamesmanship will do. Not his concern. Only cares about his own image as a "dealmaker". If he stays in office much longer, the US is well and truly f***ed.
