Protesters have blockaded Portland ICE facility and are setting up an #OccupyICE tent camp

Protesters in Portland, Oregon have besieged the city’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and are putting up tents to house an indefinite protest.

An Oregon Public Broadcasting reporter visited the facility yesterday and today, and saw protestors standing in front of cars so that staffers could not leave. Supporters sent pizza, water and other provisions for the protestors. Someone brought a portable toilet to help with the protest.

“A group of us all decided together that it’s time to shut down ICE, and that’s what we’re doing,” protestor Tony Hadden told OPB. “We can’t let this go on.” The protest grew overnight, with more tents being set up near the facility.

In an ironic touch, at one point someone from ICE reportedly asked the protestors to stop blocking their cars in “so they can get home to their families.”

I'll be there tomorrow. It's supposed to get up to 91 tomorrow...which means it will get up to the mid 90's. We need to be in the streets....making noise and telling the elected representatives of our wishes what we expect...and what we won't tolerate.

Good for Portland!!

There's always extremists that come in whenever peaceful protestors gather in PDX and wreck everything with violence .

But I'm so proud of my townspeople today.

"those damn anarchists" are often (usually? always?) agents provocateurs -- cops (or FBI or these days even contractors) provoking things so the other cops can get physical (or even more physical), start arresting people, discredit the otherwise peaceful protesters, discourage others from joining the effort because they want to avoid being beaten and gassed, etc.

Thank you for the reminder about provocateurs. Always remember: “By their fruits you shall know them”. Watch what they do and see the results, some of them work for the FBI.

I thought that they were mostly real anarchists with some guys from the right wing mixed in that wanted to make us look bad and provoke situations into devolving into violence.

Then the local news stations play that up (not just KATU/Sinclair) and it then goes Nationwide.

but I myself NEVER blame the protesters automatically, when "the news" says I should. Never. Too many agents provocateurs going back to at least the anti-Vietnam protests and probably before that as well.

The news media sure paints them with the huge broad brush of all being troublemakers.

I have a keener eye going forward now

Here is what Laredo's bridge area looks like. The Interstate heads directly into the bridge. The pink building is US Customs and BP. The building is not accessible to the public. Where would anyone sleep, much less gain access to protest? Gotta protest downtown, which is too far from offices. Also it is 100 degrees and there is no running water or bathrooms near the bridge.

Much easier to set up a camp in downtown Portland.
