Marquette Poll: Tammy Baldwin holds lead over Republican challengers

U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin holds a lead over both Republicans vying to unseat her, and 30 percent of Republican voters still don't know which candidate they'll support in the Aug. 14 primary election.

The percentage of undecided voters in the Republican Senate primary this month shrank by 19 percent from the last Marquette University Law School poll, released in March. According to the latest poll, released Wednesday, 37 percent of Republicans plan to vote for Delafield businessman Kevin Nicholson, while 35 percent plan to support state Sen. Leah Vukmir, R-Brookfield. The margin of error for those results was 6.9 percentage points.

Against Baldwin, both candidates fall behind in head-to-head matchups.

Of the 800 Wisconsin voters surveyed, 50 percent supported Baldwin over 39 percent who supported Nicholson. Against Vukmir, Baldwin netted 49 percent to Vukmir's 40 percent. The margin of error was 4 points.

Baldwin's favorability rating was up slightly from March. Forty-one percent of voters viewed her favorably, up from 37 percent in March. Forty-three percent viewed her unfavorably, also up from 39 percent. ............................................

Editorial: Tammy Baldwin was so very right to oppose judicial activist Neil Gorsuch

One of the best arguments for re-electing Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin is her vote against confirming Neil Gorsuch to serve a life term on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Baldwin does not need to remind us that her vote against Gorsuch was one of the most important votes she has cast as a U.S. senator. The justice provides those reminders on a regular basis.

Gorsuch did so in a profound way just last week, when he tipped the high court balance in favor of an outrageous election suppression scheme.

Gorsuch put himself squarely on the side of hyperpartisan Republicans who are trying to win elections by erecting barriers to voters who might not cast Republican ballots.

Some people were surprised that Gorsuch and four other conservative justices went to the partisan extremes that they did. But Baldwin saw it coming.

When Trump nominated Gorsuch early in 2017, Baldwin said: “The American people deserve an independent Supreme Court justice who will protect the constitutional rights and freedoms of all Americans, not someone who will put his own political preferences above the law and legislate President Trump’s far right agenda from the bench of our nation’s highest court. That is the test I will apply as I give fair consideration to this nomination.”
