Merkel Reverses Long-Held Stance on Migrants in Bid to Save Her Government

Source: nyt

BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel, who staked her legacy on welcoming hundreds of thousands of migrants into Germany, agreed on Monday to build camps for those seeking asylum and to tighten the border with Austria to save her government.

It was a spectacular turnabout for a leader who was once seen as the standard-bearer of the liberal European order but who has come under intense pressure at home over her migration policy.

Ms. Merkel will limp on as chancellor as a result of her move, an agreement with conservatives in her coalition government. For how long is unclear as populism and nationalism are taking root — fast — in the mainstream of German politics.

we now have US, UK, Italy, Mexico, Poland going nationalist. Of course, Russia, China, Japan have always been nationalist. France, Germany and I beleive Sweden have growing nationalist movements...
I wonder if the trade war is to help break EU.

The European migrant "crisis" was largely due to the Syrian civil war. That war was in part due to a crippling drought unseen in severity for 1,000 years: https://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2015/03/150302-syria-war-climate-change-drought/

Now imagine what we'll be seeing 20-30 yr from now, as the climate blows through multiple tipping points and hundreds of millions of people are impacted, most severely in more impoverished nations unable to cope with needed adaptations.

National borders will start slamming shut in even the most liberal nations, leaving millions to die 😢

she needs to respect it and comply. There are hundreds of people that want to be chancellor. Leaders can be replaced.
It’s good that she sees it.
