Red-hot planet: All-time heat records have been set all over the world during the past week

Source: Washington Post

(This article, originally published Tuesday, was updated Wednesday to add all-time heat records at Mount Washington, N.H., and Tbilisi, Georgia set since Monday.)

From the normally mild summer climes of Ireland, Scotland and Canada to the scorching Middle East, numerous locations in the Northern Hemisphere have witnessed their hottest weather ever recorded over the past week. . . .

The ones I have "spoken with" on the topic are willfully denying any possibility that it might actually be true.

Kick them in the balls.

Hard!

Trump has sucked the air out of the room for discussing anything else. By the time we get rid of him, we may be so far over the climate change tipping point that the only question will be when, and not if, the planet becomes inhabitable within our grandkids' lifetimes.

I've started to think that the current fight against a border wall may be hopeless, because once millions of climate refugees start arriving, wealthier nations around the world will be slamming their doors shut.

This summer on the edge of the desert in So Cal it's been kind of a cooler summer so far. Even if we were to have a couple of hot months it would have still been cooler than normal. That means that heat went to other places. The temperate predictable weather is going by the wayside.

Mount Washington, N.H., tied its all-time warmest low temperature of 60 degrees on July 2.
Burlington, Vt., set its all-time warmest low temperature ever recorded of 80 degrees on July 2.

That's the measure of infrared energy that cannot escape back out into space at night. There's one primary cause, greenhouse gases reflecting that IR energy back towards Earth.

The only question remaining is how long we have before crop failure. A decade? Two? Five?

If we were serious and planted millions of trees all over suburban landscapes everywhere, we would make a difference.
