Los Angeles police say a 92-year-old man was beaten with a brick during his regular walk around his neighborhood on Independence Day.

Rodolfo Rodriguez was reportedly doing his routine walk when he accidentally bumped into a young girl on the sidewalk, The Sacramento Bee reported.

That’s when Rodriguez was reportedly attacked by the toddler’s mother on the sidewalk. She proceeded to push him to the ground and repeatedly hit his face with a brick, police said.

“Go back to your country, why are you here, bad things,” a resident who witnessed the incident told a local CBS affiliate.

A manhunt is underway for five people suspected of beating a 92-year-old Los Angeles man and telling him to “go back to” Mexico, police have said.

Rodolfo Rodriguez, a legal US resident and grandfather living in the neighbourhood of Willowbrook, was out for his daily evening walk on 4 July when he reportedly, accidentally bumped into a woman walking along the same sidewalk with a child.

The woman proceeded to shove him to the ground and hit him over the head with a brick, according to Mr Rodriguez’s account of the incident.

Mr Rodriguez's neighbour, Misbel Borja, called the police and caught part of the incident on camera. Four men also allegedly kicked Mr Rodriguez several times, leaving his face and torso severely bruised and bleeding.

But the fact that the perp is African-American is relevant for two points:

1. It makes the claim that she was a Trump supporter statistically far less likely (and thus such assertions should be avoided to prevent loss of credibility) and

2. There is huge mutual animosity between blacks and Hispanics, fueled by multiple issues, but including: mutual racism and the fact that polls show that blacks believe they have been disproportionately hurt economically by cheaper immigrant labor. (Whether this second point is valid is true or not is disputable, but the belief of its truth is widespread in the black community.)

We ignore these real issues at our peril as a big tent party.

A 92-year-old man who was thrown to the ground, stomped on by strangers on the Fourth of July was recovering Tuesday in his Los Angeles-area home.

"Who would do this to anybody?" the victim's grandson, Erik Mendoza, told NBC Los Angeles.

"A 92-year-old senior citizen, what can he do to anybody?" Mendoza added. "There's no harm that he meant."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation following Wednesday night's attack on the man, Rodolfo Rodriguez, a native of Mexico and legal U.S. resident, in the community of Willowbrook.
