President Trumps relationship with German Chancellor Angela Merkel seemingly couldnt get any colder.
The two have been at odds since before his presidency began.
Trump ripped Merkel during the campaign and didn't shake her hand the first time she visited Washington after his inauguration.
Merkel, who enjoyed a strong relationship with President Obama, has responded in kind. Her office released a now-famous photo after the G-7 summit in Canada earlier this year that appeared to depict her staring down Trump. For many, the photo highlighted Trump's isolation among western leaders.

(3,515 posts)That was its original purpose. But now it serves the purpose of insuring harmony among the countries that belong to it.
Trump does not understand how the world has changed since he was a child.
And I wonder whether Putin "gets it"?
European countries fought with each other over and over at a huge cost in terms of deaths and economic destruction.
And since NATO, those countries that are members share information and deal with each other without war. That is why NATO is a sacred bond that we should all value.
Trump is an ignoramus when it comes to foreign policy. How can anyone support him?
No war in Western Europe since 1945??????
That is the accomplishment of NATO. That peace is well worth any price.
We should not leave NATO or Europe no matter what.
I cannot believe the ignorance of Trump's statements. And the nodding heads on his side of the table???? Where have these people been since 1945?

BERLIN (AP) The steady drum of anti-German rhetoric from the United States, one of the country's traditionally closest friends, has people wondering whether to get ready for a messy breakup.
First, it was then-candidate Donald Trump's campaign trail contention that Chancellor Angela Merkel was "ruining Germany" with her decision to allow in more than 1 million asylum-seekers in 2015 and 2016. Then, as president, came his repeated criticism of the German export surplus with a focus on its popular car brands like Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen, and the accusation Berlin is shirking its NATO obligations by spending too little on defense.
So everyone thought they were prepared for Trump's arrival at the NATO summit, but were still taken aback by his attack on Germany's energy policy and joint gas pipeline venture with Moscow, which he said it leaves Berlin "totally controlled" and "captive to Russia."
"Trump at NATO Summit: It's not just bad, it's a catastrophe," the influential Sueddeutsche Zeitung headlined its story online.
