Illinois officer resigns after not helping woman harassed for wearing Puerto Rico shirt

An Illinois police officer resigned after facing public criticism for not helping a woman who was harassed for wearing a Puerto Rico flag shirt.

A now-viral video showed Officer Patrick Connor failing to intervene when a man identified as Timothy G. Trybus began to harass 24-year-old Mia Irizarry, calling her un-American for wearing a Puerto Rico shirt.

Irizarry said she had rented out a pavilion in a Forest Preserves of Cook County park last month to celebrate her 24th birthday, CNN reported Thursday.

Trybus is seen in the video harassing her for wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rico flag. She posted a video of the altercation on Facebook in June and it has since been viewed more than 1.5 million times.

In Mia Irizarry’s video, Officer Patrick Connor tells her that he didn’t intervene because Trybus “is a regular and doesn’t have a violent history.” He also said he’s not a threat, but “just a big mouth.” She can be heard telling Connor, “but anything is possible,” to which he acknowledges, “you’re right.”

But public records show that in 2006, Trybus was charged in Cook County with battery (causing bodily harm) and domestic battery. In November 2006, he was sentenced to 120 days in Cook County Jail. Details of that case were not immediately available.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Trybus’ criminal history goes back farther than that. Trybus was arrested in 1997 and charged with criminal trespass a few days after an order of protection was filed against him. He was also charged with domestic battery that same year, but both cases were later dropped, along with the protective order, the newspaper reports. He was charged with domestic battery again in 2001 and that case was also dropped.

9. That is amazing - I would think they could have easily arrested the guy for disturbing the peace

and quickly removed him.
Yet there were as I saw it at least 4 officers there and no one made a move to remove Trybus for at least a half an hour.

10. If the person acting that way had been black

the cop would have run over, drawn his gun, thrown him to the ground, handcuffed him while kneeling full force on him, and arrested him IMMEDIATELY for "public intoxication and disturbing the peace"... and then he'd have been thrown into the back of the police car "and not being gentle" about it per his "dear leader". And the guy is prancing around with a damn (I guess bullet-proof) vest on with all sorts of neat little pockets in it full of who knows what.

It's sad that it took a 2nd officer to finally come over and actually get the jerk.

the whole reason every one of them has a job in the first place. Same applies to ALL PUBLIC SERVANTS, you get a taxpayer's funded paycheck then you serve the public
