IRS reduces donor reporting rules for some tax-exempt groups

Certain tax-exempt groups will no longer be required to provide the names and addresses of donors to the IRS on annual forms under guidance that the Treasury Department and IRS released Monday evening.
The guidance reflects a priority of conservatives, who have been pushing for the IRS to bar collection of the donor information as part of their efforts to prevent the agency from targeting groups for their political beliefs.
Under federal law, charitable organizations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) have to provide to the IRS information about the names and addresses of substantial donors. The IRS has required other types of tax-exempt organizations including 501(c)(4) social-welfare organizations that advocate for specific policies to also provide the agency with that information.
The names and addresses of donors is generally supposed to be kept private, but this information has improperly been made public in the past, notably in the case of the socially conservative National Organization for Marriage in 2012.

(24,688 posts)Gowdy To Trump: Recognizing Russian Meddling Wont Delegitimize Your Win
By Nicole Lafond | July 16, 2018 2:18 pm
House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) on Monday released a blistering statement reiterating that Russia interfered in the 2016 election and calling on a number of officials on President Trumps team to inform him that it is possible to conclude Russia interfered with out election in 2016 without delegitimizing his electoral success.
Read Gowdys full statement below:
Russia is not our friend. Russia attempted to undermine the fundamentals of our democracy, impugn the reliability of the 2016 election, and sow the seeds of discord among Americans. Our intelligence community, including the current one, concluded this, as did the Majority House Intelligence Committee report, as did our fellow Americans who served on grand juries which returned true bills on two separate occasions. I am confident former CIA Director and current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, DNI Dan Coats, Ambassador Nikki Haley, FBI Director Chris Wray, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and others will be able to communicate to the President it is possible to conclude Russia interfered with our election in 2016 without delegitimizing his electoral success.

(19,192 posts)that Trump's toadies (Pompeo, Coats, Haley, Wray, Sessions etc.) could actually convince Trump that although Russia did interfere in the 2016 election, that it had absolutely no impact on the legitimacy of Trump's "historic" victory?
Wow, Gowdy! You're really going out on a limb there, aren't you?
Gowdy has to be one of the most ignorant, feckless Republicans in a party replete with ignorant, feckless Republicans. It's no wonder he holds a leadership position with the House Republicans who are groveling at Trump's feet, ass, and groin.

(16,932 posts)can find the information regardless. Until the cyberwar with russia is over, I am comfortable with our security organizations knowing this kind of stuff. In the years ahead, we can rein them in. And change the disclosure laws.
