Alleged Russian Spy, Butina, Convinced John Bolton to Make Video For Her Russian Gun Rights Group

Source: Hill Reporter

While Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin overshadowed most of the other news taking place for the day, the unsealing of charges by the DOJ against 29-year-old Maria Butina, certainly shouldn’t go unnoticed. In what may be one of the more explosive stories related to the Trump/Russia investigation thus far, Butina was charged with conspiring to act as an unregistered foreign agent in violation of Title 18, Section 371 of the United States Code. The criminal complaint and subsequent affidavit allege that she helped set up a back channel between what appears to be the GOP and the Kremlin, via the NRA.

One of the more interesting tidbits to be found in the affidavit supporting Butina’s charges, are allegations that Butina, along with the Kremlin and NRA-connected Russian politician, Alexander Torshin, convinced John Bolton to go on Russian TV to promote Butina’s gun rights group, ‘ The Right to Bear Arms’.

In 2013, Bolton, who is now Trump’s National Security Advisor with a top security clearance, worked with Butina, who is now alleged to be a Russian spy, to create a video promoting the right to bear arms in Russia. The video, which can be seen below, shows Bolton addressing and expressing his wishes for the Russian people:

go down with the rest.

Seriously, what is it with all of these perennial bad actors being resurrected over and over? They shouldn't be allowed out in public, let alone in positions of power.

And I know that it isn't your headline, but I'm not sure that it's really alleged that she's a Russian spy, unless you use that term _very_ broadly. She's being charged with being a unregistered Russian agent rather than being a Russian spy. The distinction is important because an agent of a foreign power can register with the US government, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the charging document that indicates that she's done something that would have been illegal had she been registered. If you contrast that with espionage, espionage is generally not legal even if you have registered yourself as a foreign agent.

(I'm not minimizing the severity of this, and I think this indictment is actually one of the more interesting and embarrassing indictments so far, but I think the words matter).

...There are no and there will be no "gun rights" in Russia. Putin* will never allow ordinary Russian citizens to have guns. He's too afraid they'd be used against him and his regime.

No, Ms. Butina's "gun rights" scam is primarily used to interface with America's NRA and to funnel dark Russian money to the NRA... ILLEGALLY, of course.
