A majority of Trump voters said that they were at least somewhat worried about MS-13 targeting them or their families and 85% believe that the violent gang is a serious threat to the United States, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov survey.

Why it matters: Trump has repeatedly used the gang to validate his administration's "zero-tolerance" policy at the southern border and the need for a wall. While the gang's actions are indeed vicious, its members prey almost exclusively on immigrant communities in small, specific areas of the U.S.

MS-13, like other gang members, stay in their own neighborhoods, prey on newcomers and immigrants who lack "protection" by familiarity with that neighborhood and target associates of other gang members that live there. They don't go to the 'burbs or out in the county seats and break into the modest ranch homes and McMansions there. And gangs like that certainly aren't organized enough to do much more than war with each other. Unlike white collar Mobs, who run corporations that snap up masses of affordable housing and build luxury developments on them, establish storefront cult churches to suck money off rubes afraid of the hereafter and punish those who don't want to pay to belong to the cult, run predatory money lending operations - or buy elections as GOP "representatives" and remove the social and economic safeguards for the society at large.

I've lived in diverse, "gang-infested" and immigrant neighborhoods - and still prefer to do so. The only times I've ever been a victim of crime was when I was living in "safe, middle class" white neighborhoods. Their bratty teenage or grown slacker children, and the equally slacker "friends" of those children committed more crime and caused more local mayhem than any gang-bangers I've ever been associated with.
Every time I've been robbed, burgled, or my property vandalized, it was by a "troubled" young white man from a "good family" living in the neighborhood. And I've heard random gunfire in pretty near every neighborhood I've ever lived in since I can remember - from about the 1980's on.

Statistically, you are more in danger from a person you know or living in your neighborhood than you are from strangers or organized criminals - unless, of course, you regularly associate with organized criminals or seek out strangers for the thrill.

My block would sometimes (not often) get tagged by them. LAPD maps put their turf maybe a half mile from here

Rampant gentrification seems to have put an end to this
