Senate Republicans drop bid to block Trump from helping Chinese telecom giant ZTE

Senate Republicans have dropped their attempt to reimpose U.S. sanctions on the Chinese telecommunications giant ZTE, lawmakers said Friday, a victory for President Trump as congressional Republicans abandoned a rare effort to thwart his agenda.
The retreat means ZTE, a company found guilty of selling U.S. goods to Iran in violation of sanctions, will duck Commerce Department penalties that bar U.S. companies from doing business with it. U.S. and Chinese officials had said those penalties would effectively put ZTE out of business.
Trump had ordered his own Commerce Department to lift the penalties as part of a broader negotiating strategy with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but senators voted to reimpose them as part of a sweeping defense policy bill they passed last month.
But the House version of the defense bill did not include the same provision. And senators have now decided to leave it out of the final compromise bill, agreeing to language advanced by the House instead. The House language bars U.S. government agencies and contractors from doing business with ZTE, but allows the company to continue doing business with private U.S. firms.

(37,648 posts)To be fair, it's hard to go against the majority in your own party. What if 4 reps went against Pelosi? Why would they, if there is no chance of succeeding?
You have to pick your battles.
But it shows that Trump owns the majority of Rushpublishans in the House.

(26,500 posts)could put pressure on McConnell to bring this up. And 3rd, fuck party. These jackasses are always talking about "national security, blah, blah, blah..". Well guess what. This is about national security.

(37,648 posts)I know we're anti-Republican, but just pointing out the double standard. You can't legitimately blame just four Senators, who have been the only ones to vote against Trump at any time, for being responsible for any bill passing because they didn't oppose it.
Following your logic, McCain should have voted to repeal Obamacare & replace it with the skinny bill...since it's all the same to you. No difference between McCain and McConnell.

(26,500 posts)we are. McCain gets somewhat of a pass given his condition. But also given the fact that he has nothing to lose. He could've easily quit the fascist party months ago and caucused with the Democrats. Since he's known before most the kind of traitor that's sitting in the White House.
And no I'm not sure you understand how the Senate and the House work. Because then you'd know how much one single senator can gun up the works if the wanted to. Like the late Jim Jeffords did.
As for the rest of that word salad. I'm not even gonna bother.

(37,648 posts)Should Pelosi caucus with the Repubilcans?
Be realistic. Those four have no more power than the Democrats. THEY are not in charge. THEY don't belong to the group that has the power. THEY have done SOME of what they can, when they want or don't want something to pass. THEY ARE REPUBLICANS. They are not against tax cuts and such. They WANT to repeal or revise Obamacare, if something is in place to replace it.
Holding some of the Republicans who DO have the strength of character to speak up, when almost no one else does, shows that you just are against Republicans, period. No matter what they do or don't do. You make no distinction between McConnell and McCain.
So that ends any reasonable discussion on the matter.

(26,500 posts)before. But since you don't seem to understand the difference between House and Senate. This all seems like a waste of time. You wanna make excuses for these fuckers while seemingly being unaware of historical precedent. Knock yourself out. The republican party has become a rancid piece of dog shit. If your ads still can't see that. It's too damn bad. I've been accused of much worse. By better informed people.
I'll say it one last time. Jim "Muthafucking" Jeffords......

ZTE, a company involved in hacking American cyber security.
A $500 million loan to Trump related projects works wonders to make America protect Chinese jobs.
Too bad our coal miners did not think of that.
