Pence, Bolton, Kelly confronted Trump in Oval Office about Russia comments

Source: LA Times

Facing condemnation from allies and foes alike on Capitol Hill, President Trump was outnumbered even in the Oval Office. Top aides gathered to persuade the president to issue a rare walk-back of the comments he'd made raising doubts about U.S. intelligence conclusions of Russian election interference as he stood alongside Vladimir Putin.

Vice President Mike Pence, national security advisor John Bolton and Chief of Staff John F. Kelly stood united in the West Wing on Tuesday in their contention that Trump had some cleanup to do. They brought with them words of alarm from Defense Secretary James N. Mattis and Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo, as well as from a host of congressional leaders and supporters of the president for whom Trump's public praise of Putin proved to be a bridge too far.

Even for Trump, a leader who has increasingly come to cast off the constraints and guidance of aides, the him-against-the-world position proved untenable. Trump may like doing things his way, eschewing advice and precedent like no president before, but he never likes being alone.

Walking off stage with Putin after their joint news conference in Helsinki, Trump was riding high after his second summit with an adversarial leader in as many months. The highly choreographed affairs had been sought out by the U.S. leader as a way to boost his credibility abroad and his favorability at home, and he believed the latest one had accomplished the task.

I call BS given that they said nothing as Trump walked into a private 1 on 1 with Putin, then agreed to invite Putin to the White House. How cute of them to pretend that they have a spine.

What is next? Some secret report that Nunes was the voice of reason talking Trump into cooperating with the Mueller investigation?

And put a qualifier, with everything they had written down, that he disagreed with. He said for sure Russia meddled in our election...and then the qualifier...as did a lot of other countries.

They got him to say nothing.

He spit in their eye.

Then, in a huff, he said he was going to get Bolton to invite Putin over for a visit this fall!

We can only hope that Bolton can walk the walk after talking the talk so much.

He should refuse to invite Putin at this time. Let Trump do whatever he wants. He's the Boss - he's not the President. Has Bolton already made the invite? Did Putin accept?

Has anyone considered that the ultimate slap in Trump's face would be that Putin declines the invitation?

Putin would do that just for a sadistic laugh and to see Trump squirm.

What would Trump say to that humiliation?

Trump is never alone. He has his 80% of Republicans who feel he can do no wrong, and that's all he ever needs. Watch for yet another "rally" this week where he can lie and obfuscate to his heart's content, and they'll cheer every Trumpian word like it came from on high.

The toadies all tell him how brilliant & wonderful he is, and that's their full-time job. I doubt that anyone would do that if they weren't getting paid. For a while it was Steve Bannon, but he's gone. So I guess now it's Bolton and Kelly.

There was probably a lot of back-slapping, a lot of attaboys, and a few way to go's.
Today's republicans have no shame, much less morals or ethics.
And, dare I say, all, or at least the majority of them, are traitors.

That would put Donny in an orbit to hell.

Good post and I hope it's true, although the outcome was comical and typical tRump. Only problem I see is that neither LAT or AP quoted a source for this White House insider info on the confrontation.

WTF? The only "boost" was would be to his deplorable and craven 35% "base" and himself. The other 65% of the U.S. and the rest of the world, outside of the white supremacist/neo-Nazi brigades, can't stand him.
